"I have a plan!" He answered briskly.

I watched as he ran off into the night, the last leaves settling down upon the bushes underneath my window. I couldn't imagine what he could possibly have planned or schemed, either way, I was already in without a second thought.

I dried my eyes and nose, trying to make myself just a little bit more presentable. I ran to the bathroom, tripping twice on my own two feet. I quickly brushed my mangled hair, all the while ignoring the excruciating pain coming from my scalp from tugging my tangles to hard. I looked at myself in the mirror and rolled my eyes. I was a complete mess. After blowing my red nose several more times, I put on some of my mauve blush and a light shade of my favorite lipstick. I sighed heavily. There was just no point in continuing to fix my distraught appearance.

Afterward, I quickly put on my black Reba McEntire t-shirt, boot-cut faded black jeans and slipped on a pair of my favorite comfortable canvas sneakers. I looked at the clock, time was slipping away. I had to hurry before he thought I wasn't coming. I quickly set up my bed just right to make it appear as if I was asleep. I used an overstuffed bear he had won me at the last fair. I placed him just right on the mattress with his body tilted to the side. He looked just like me sleeping. I placed my earplugs around his velvet ears and began playing purposely too loud. I was all set. All I needed was to gather my flashlight from my nightstand, so I could find Harley by our favorite meeting place, but plans are just never that simple.

Someone began to knock on my bedroom door, "Liana, are you awake?"

I began to panic. I looked at the mess I had caused by the bathroom and my teddy bear sleeping with the recorded music.

It is my Mom! Oh no! What the hell am I going to do!

I scurried across the room as fast as I could, leaping onto my mattress, kicking the bear roughly onto the floor, and pulling the blanket over my shoulders. I heard muffled music echo across the floor.

Oh my God! I forgot about my stupid earplugs!

The door began to open slowly. A silhouette appeared from the lighted hallway.

"Liana, are you awake?" She asked cautiously one more time.

I leaned over almost falling out of my bed in an attempt to yank the earphones off my teddy bear. I gather them just in time to slip them over my ears and throw my head onto my well-worn pillow.

Please, just go away mom! For the love of, God! Please! Go away!

I squeezed my eyes together tightly as possible. I realize how much of an idiot I would have looked like, so I had to remind myself to appear natural.

Don't move, Liana! Just breath slowly! Relax! You can do this!

I heard her open the door the rest of the way. I took a silent breath in hopes of regulating my heartbeat and panicked expression.

"Oh dear. She has fallen asleep listening to that God-awful music again." My mother says in a sarcastic tone.

She began to cover me up and said, "Liana Dear, stop playing possum. I know you can hear me."

I stay silent in hopes that she will get the hint.

She sighs heavily, "My dear, I think you are more stubborn than me... if that is possible. I hope you know, that is why your father probably left. My personality was just too strong for him. God rest his soul."

I didn't want to hear her stories that night. On how the perfect man slipped out of her greedy hands and died in peace- leaving all his money to his wife who was no more than eighteen or maybe twenty of age at the most.

She stayed quiet longer than most of our nightly talks. She sighed out loud. It was enough for me to purposely hear her over my blasting music. She gently pulled one of the plugs from my left ear and said softly, "I just wanted to let you know, I give you permission to do what you have to do tonight, Liana."

My heart stopped beating. She couldn't possibly have known Harley had come by! What else could she possibly be talking about?"

I kept quiet. I wasn't going to give any reason for us to fight. I wanted so bad to leave and see Harley. Nothing was going to ruin my plans.

"Liana, I need you to listen to me. I know everything, but I also know there is more going on than you realize as well. So please, before you run off after your friend, make sure this is what you really want. One small decision can change an entire lifetime. I hope you know that."

Afterward, she gently kissed me gently on my forehead and surprised me by saying something she hadn't said since I was seven years old," I love you my little butterfly. I always have, and I always will."

She stood up and walked out of the room leaving me with a single tear sliding down my face. My lip trembled. I refused to cry once more. I had worked too hard on mastering my make-up and clothes. I stare towards the door in disbelief. My mother. My forever unrelenting, opinionated mother had outright given me permission to go see, Harley.
