"Why isn't he waking up? Why aren't they waking up?" I hear.

I slowly open my eyes. Very slowly. They feel so heavy. I didn't know it was possible to have to work this hard just to get my damn eyelids to work.

I relax and try again. This time it's easier but it's still taking  a lot of effort. Close. Open. Close. Open. Close. On the fifth try they open and stay open. There's a haze, like a thin layer of film has been placed over my eyes. I can't focus.

I don't try to move, just opening my eyes was a struggle. So I lie here and blink. How lame is that?

"It's ok Hathai. It's going to be ok." A female voice says.

Hathai that's Beam's mom's name. So Beam's mom is here.

"Kovit is working on it along with Thanom and Ruang Sak. They'll figure it out." The voice says.

Kovit is Beam's dad, Thanom is Ming's dad, and Ruang Sak is Yo's dad.  Ok there working together.

"I just don't understand Kannika, how did those people get into the house? How did they know where they lived?" Beam's mom asks.  Her voice keeps breaking like she's about to cry.

Kannika is Kit's mom. Of course she would be here.

"It had to have been done while they were at work. And really, we don't know how long Malai has been in country. She could have been here for months plotting this." Kit's mom says.

The door opens and someone walks in. The steps hasten and the steps sound heavier as they get closer.

"Phana. Oh my god Phana. I can't believe you're awake." A male voice is speaking.

A body lays over me and I can feel hot tears spill onto my neck. I assume this my dad. Gosh why do these voices sound so distorted? it's frustrating not recognizing them right away.

"My poor, poor baby boy. I'm so sorry I couldn't keep you safe." My dad says.

I blink.

He clears his throat then starts touching me. He grabs my wrist and places his fingers against it. Ah yes, checking my pulse. I know this. He presses a small circle against my chest. A stethoscope, listening to my heart and lungs. He pushes my eyelids up and something glows in front of my eyes. Checking to see if my pupils are reactive.

"His eyes are open but I'm not getting anything from them." He says.

Well of course not, there's something covering them.

"Everything else seems fine though. I just don't understand. I wish I knew what type of gas they pumped into the house. I assumed it was carbon monoxide or nitrous oxide but the effects don't linger like this.  And why are the boys taking so long to wake up when that other guy woke up days ago." He asks sounding frustrated.

Oooh I know the answer. Ask me. Not gonna ask? That's ok I'll tell you anyway. We must have been injected with something.

This is really familiar.

Why?

Think Phana.  Why is this familiar?

Flashes of our ER rotation come to mind.  It's when Kit, Beam, and I were interns.

There was an accident.  An electrician was working at a construction site but the building was unstable and collapsed burying three people.  He was one of them.  They brought him to us and we stabalized him for surgery.

After his surgery I was charged with monitoring and distributing his meds.  He was in an induced coma so it was important that his meds be given at exactly....
