"Hey what are you guys do this weekend?" I asked as I came in the kitchen. It was Day of the Departed weekend. Which means the boarding school would be closed and we would be free. For three days. But still freedom!
"I'm game." Crystal shrugged. "What do you have in mind?" "A costume party about two hours from the city. Who's in?" I said quickly hoping they wouldn't ask anymore questions.
"Wait a minute how do you know about this 'cool costume party'?" Kai asked skeptically. "I know people." I insisted. "Oh really? Like who?" Cole challenged. They all looked at me half expectantly half questioningly. Finally I cracked.
"OK fine. My neighborhood is having a Day of the Departed block party and my mom said they need extra chaperones." I moaned. "Spending my break from kids with kids?" Crystal asked raising an eyebrow. "No thank you."
"Oh come on it wouldn't kill us. After all it is a party." Nya reminded them. It took a while of coaxing but the guys all finally agreed.
On the day of the party we are headed to my old neighborhood in our gis. I've got to say it felt good to wear in again. After a quick look around the area we all grab some snacks and started talking with some of my old neighbors.
"Omar James is that really you?" I heard someone call from behind me. I turned around and saw an elderly lady that I remembered as Mrs.Felts. (She used to babysit my brothers and sisters and I when our parents went away on business.)
"It's good to see you again." I smiled and introduced her to the team. "I have to say Omar it took a while but you seem to have made some good friends." Mrs.Felts complemented. She turned to my friends. "When I used to babysit for the James' he never seemed to play with anyone his own age. If anything he was the primary target for the neighborhood bullies. I remember one Day of the Departed..."
                              ----------~FLASHBACK~----------
There comes a time in every child's life where he feels grown up enough to go around the neighborhood by himself and on this Day of the Departed that's exactly how 9 year old Omar felt. He'd worked on his costume for weeks, getting every detail just right and now he was going to be a candy magnate.
He went to a few houses before falling in step with some kids from his class. Somewhere along the way someone proposed a contest of who could collect the most and the best candy by the end of the night. All the children raced from house to house, filling their bags to the brim.
Finally they all met in the neighborhood square. While everyone had a good haul there was no arguing that Omar had won by a landslide. Dragon sized candy bars, fresh homemade popcorn, caramel apples and not a comb or a toothbrush in sight.
Most of the kids were happy for him and a few were down right impressed. But there was one boy in particular who was far from thrilled. 'Killer' Kenny Karter, the neighborhood bully, never had taken well to losing and was about to take his revenge.
After making a few trades Omar began to make his way home. When he was a block away he had a feeling that he was being followed. He picked up the pace. Soon he was at the curb, waiting to cross the street. He could see his house. He was almost safe. Just as he was about to make a break for it when someone grabbed him from behind and lifted him off the ground.
"Let me go!" Omar screamed as he struggled to get free. "Big hunka' good that candy's doing ya now ain't it?" One of the boys holding him laughed. "I think I'll hold on to this." Kenny smirked as he picked up Omar's candy bag off the sidewalk.
"Tell your goons to let me go." Omar demand. "Fat chance." Kenny said as he fished a piece of candy from Omar's stash and chomped it down. "Give 'im the hangman surprise." The bully smirked.
It turned out the hangman surprise was hanging Omar from a sturdy tree branch by the back of his costume and securing him in place with toilet paper.
The poor boy probably would've hung there all night if Mrs. Felts hadn't been walking home with the twins at that moment. Once she got him down she spent the rest of the night consoling and comforting the poor traumatized boy.
                                -----~END OF FASHBACK~-----
"Whatever happened to Killer- er I mean Kenny Carter anyway?" I asked trying to cover up my embarrassment. "Oh, no ones seen that boy in over a year. It's as if he disappeared off the face of the earth." Mrs. Felts shrugged.
"He's probably in juvy." I mumbled sulkily. "Can't be. If he was I'd know him." Crystal said absent mindedly. "You kids had better get going though if you want to get a good view of the fireworks." The elder called and she headed to wards the neighborhood square.
"Sorry about making you guys come to the block party." I apologized as the team sat down. "What are you apologizing for?" Cole laughed. "Yeah!" Jay agreed. "It's been a pretty fun night."
"Gotta say I didn't expect to have so much fun spending my break from kids with kids." Crystal grinned me a playful punch in the arm.
