"So the bastard is dating something else?" My dad asked once again.
"Yes, dad. I've answered this too many times already.
"He's fucking strange." He leaned back on his chair, rubbing his chin with his hand. "I don't understand, it just doesn't add up."
"I left for a year, dad. I didn't tell him when I was coming back. I didn't expect for him to sit around for me. He's a grown man, he's twenty-nine, for God's sake. He deserve's to be with someone especially after the hell he lived through with me."
"I'm going to have to stop you right there, Eileen." Nicole walked into the living room just as the words left my mouth. "None of what happened was your fault."
"I know," I said exasperated. We were going to have this conversation once again, and Alex was about to pick me up. "I just mean that he really wouldn't have lived through so much if he hadn't met me, Nicole. You know that."
"Still. He knew your past, he knew you were running and he stayed regardless. He chose to stay. You didn't force him, he made the conscious decision to stay. Unless of course, he decided when you two were going at it," she turned to my dad who made a face. "Sorry, honey."
"You just always have to be so fucking straight forward," my dad muttered.
"Even if he is with another woman, dear, you two are forever connected. What you two lived through is unforgettable, the good, the bad. He'll always be a part of you, just like you'll always be a part of him. Don't lose his 'friendship' just to avoid feeling what you feel. It's not going away."
It was nice having a family for once. Nicole, was taking the place of a mother I could hardly remember. I knew she cared about me, and it filled me with joy. I could see the sincerity in her advice. The adoring look my dad gave her told me that he was just as happy that she was now in our lives.
"I need a baby brother or sister," I blurted out.
Nicole's eyes widened and my dad began coughing. I laughed.
"See, Nicole is not the only one that blurts out what she thinks," I said with a wink. "Now, I'm going to change, Alex should be here shortly so just tell him to wait."
After deliberating for a long time, I finally decided to wear jeans and a hoodie. I wasn't trying to impress anybody, right?
I did leave my hair down, though.
