Mohamed:
Can I call you?I stared at the text blankly. I was in my room like every other typical Saturday going over my notes from the past week.
Should I let him call me? What would we even talk about? I was so used to texting and joking over text. I was overthinking it so I texted back saying sure.
My phone immediately lit up with his name and I answered after 2 rings.
"Hello?"
"Assalaam alaykum." His voice was deeper than it was in real life. A quiet voice inside my head remembered how Ethan's voice sounded on the phone which made me smile.
"Walaykum assalaam." I replied.
"How are you?" He asked like he always did.
"I'm good. What about you?"
"I'm okay. What are you up to?" He asked.
"Just going over my notes." I said just before there was an awkward silence.
"Can I ask you a question?" I said breaking the silence.
"You can ask me anything."
"Why do you keep texting me?" I tapped at my desk.
"I thought it was obvious."he laughed.
"Yes it is, but I want to hear it from you, not those bitchy girls at school."
"Okay, I like you, like a lot." He finally said it. I was supposed to be happy about that right. I was supposed to feel the same way. Then why did I feel nothing?
"You wanna know something?"
"Sure?" This was so odd to me. I was so used to speaking to people who knew me and only having small talk with others.
"We've been texting for about a two weeks, well I do most of the texting." I chuckled because it was so true.
I rarely spent time on my phone these days, it would mostly be for texting Grayson and talking to my mom weekly. Other than that, the people I loved most I saw almost everyday so I spent most of my time with them.
"and I've liked you since the start of the year."
"You did? I didn't even know you." I told him.
"I know, but I knew you. The reason why I didn't approach you then is really funny." He laughed and I waited.
"Tell me! Why?"
"Okay." He said as he attempted to stop laughing. "I thought you and mike were going out."
"What!" I squealed.
"What it's not my fault! You guys are like so close like way closer than any Muslim girl should be to a guy, like you guys hug and hold hands. what else was I suppose to think?"
"We're best friends!"
"Okay I know that now." He said and I was still laughing on the inside but completely shocked. Do me and Mike look like a couple? I mean him and Sandra maybe, but me and him.
"Guess what?" He asked.
"What?"
"I have a surprise for you tomorrow." The smile dropped from my face and I looked down at my hands.
"A surprise, what do you mean?" I asked. A sudden feeling rose in my stomach when I recalled the last time I got a surprise. I looked down at the ring on my finger, I never took it off.
"Well it won't be a surprise if you tell you. You'll see." He said and I hated waiting.
"Okay whatever."
