Moonkit playfully batted at Icekit's fluffy tail while waiting for Shadekit to wake up. Icekit mewled in protest, tucking her tail out of reach. Getting impatient, and unable to wait any longer, Moonkit pounced on Shadekit's sleeping figure.
"Rrrow!" Shadekit leapt to his paws, hissing, then stopped, blinking when he saw that it was just his mischievous sister. "Come on!" Moonkit yowled. "I want to visit Fangkit!"
Fangkit had moved to the medicine den after starting to cough a few sunrises ago. The siblings tried to visit whenever they could, though their trips usually ended with Featherbreeze, the medicine cat, kicking them out for 'rowdy and unruly behavior'.
Shadekit shook his head. "We shouldn't go back to the medicine cat den." He muttered. "We'll get kicked out again if we set foot there. We caused a huge racket last time."
Moonkit lightly swatted her brother. "We're four moons old for StarClan's sake! We can control ourselves if we want to! Besides, Featherbreeze always acts grumpy around kits. I bet she's quite fond of us, but doesn't really show it."
"Yeah!" Snowkit chimed in, then added slyly, "Unless you're just saying that because you're lazy and want to sleep..."
Shadekit let out an annoyed huff but didn't complain any further.
The three littermates padded into Featherbreeze's den. Moonkit wrinkled her nose as she inhaled the sharp tang of herbs, then sniffed deeply to smell if Featherbreeze or Skyheart were in the den. Featherbreeze must have been out collecting herbs, because her scent was a slightly stale. But Skyheart was there. "Are you here for Fangkit?" She asked without looking up from stuffing a pile of leaf-wrapped berries into a crack in the den wall.
"Yes! Can we see him?" Icekit asked eagerly.
Skyheart purred in amusement as Moonkit raced towards Fangkit's nest without waiting for her to reply.
The three kits clustered around their brother. "Hi Fangkit!" Icekit mewed cheerfully. "We decided to pay you a visit!"
Fangkit blinked sleepily and coughed. "Hi guys! What am I missing?" Fangkit sat up eagerly as Moonkit filled him in, occasionally getting interrupted by Shadekit and Icekit, who added in details and comments of their own.
"We should sneak out again like last time—" Moonkit started, lowering her voice so the other sick cats in the den couldn't hear her.
"What are you three doing in here?" A voice hissed. Featherbreeze suddenly towered over them, smelling freshly of the pine forest and herbs. "Your brother needs rest!"
"No, I don't!" Fangkit insisted indignantly, fluffing out his fur until he looked like an annoyed little cotton ball.
"Yes, you do." Featherbreeze gently chided, then turned her attention towards the other kits. "Your mother must be worrying about you." She commented.
Moonkit let out an exaggerated sigh but trailed after her littermates as they bounded back to their soft nests.
Frostfire purred and started to smooth down her fur with steady rasps of her tongue as she settled down in a comfortable position. "Goodnight my little warrior." Moonkit's eyelids drooped, and she let out a content sigh. A few moments later, sleep took over.
Moonkit woke up to an anguished wail. She bolted out of her nest, her fur spiked. Another wail echoed across the clearing. Frostfire! Frostfire was hunched over a small figure in the center of the clearing. Icekit and Shadekit drowsily stumbled out of their nests behind her. "What's wrong?" Moonkit sprinted over to Frostfire. "What happened?"
