Her sigh disturbed the leaves on the bush. One scraped her nose, and she sneezed. "Shush!" Badgerclaw snapped. "Do you want them to hear us?" Moonpaw didn't reply. After the attack, Darkstar had become wary. He had assigned a daily guard by the border.
"If they come," Badgerclaw reminded. "Pretend that you're hunting." Moonpaw let out a small huff when he wasn't looking. I wish Darkstar hadn't lost a life. She thought fiercely. It's all ThunderClan's fault! I was a fool to trust them!
Gingerly, she licked the two scars that Sunpaw had given her in the battle. One on her shoulder blade, the other on the upper part of her front leg. I hope I gave her some scars that she'll never forget! Moonpaw growled softly, relishing the thought.
"Have you given any thought about the Gathering?" Badgerclaw prompted. Moonpaw blinked. She hadn't even remembered that the Gathering was a sunrise away. "No. Is something different going to happen? Will Darkstar mention the rogues?" "No. But it'll be interesting how RiverClan and WindClan are reacting to the ThunderClan attack."
She nodded. "Leafbare's coming. Does Skyheart still have that catmint that we gathered?" "Yes. We've been fortunate that no cat is sick. And even if we do, our warriors will protect them." Moonpaw felt a burst of pride. My clan will survive! We will survive this leafbare!

Moonpaw woke up to panicked meows and a painful shriek. She rushed out of the den. "What's happening?" Duststorm raced past her and paused in front of the nursery. "Lizardleap's kitting!" "Really? That's great!" A purr rose in her throat. A crowd of anxious cats had gathered outside of the nursery. "Move!" Featherbreeze snapped, pushing her way through the crowd. "Make space!" Skyheart was close behind, a wad of herbs clamped tightly in her jaws.
Icepaw peered in, frightened for her mentor. "She won't be fit to train me for a while, right? Will I fall behind?" "I'm sure Darkstar will a point a temporary mentor for you." Frostfire murmured reassuringly. "In fact," A voice rumbled from behind them, making Moonpaw almost jump. "I will right now."
With one graceful leap, Darkstar propelled himself up onto the Tall Stump. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather around the Tall Stump for a clan meeting!" The cats who were awake crowded around, while the cats who were half asleep dragged themselves out of their dens.
"What's going on?" Shadepaw mumbled. "Shush and you'll find out!" Icepaw said in a loud whisper. "As most of you know, Lizardleap is having Duststorm's kits." Murmurs erupted from the clearing. Darkstar flicked his tail for silence. "Lizardleap is a good mentor to Icepaw, but she will need a mentor for a short period of time." He looked around. "Rockfoot, there is no other cat suited for this job as you. Will you train Icepaw while Lizardleap is nursing?" Rockfoot dipped his head. "Of course."
A triumphant yowl sounded from the nursery. Skyheart padded out, her eyes sparkling. "Two toms!" She announced. All of the cats assembled meowed their congratulations. "Come on!" Icepaw whined. "I want to see them! Now! Come on, come on, come on!" Moonpaw flicked her tail. "Fine. Let's go."
Lizardleap wearily lifted her head as the two apprentices padded in. Icepaw gasped. "They're so cute!" Moonpaw couldn't help but agreeing. One was a dusty shade of brown, like his father, but had his mother's hazel eyes. The other had a thin light gray pelt, almost silver, with curious ice blue eyes. "What are their names?" Icepaw asked. Lizardleap let out an exhausted purr. "This one's Amberkit." She nudged the dusty brown one. "And this one's Stormkit."
Stormkit peered up at her with huge, unblinking ice blue eyes. Moonpaw felt herself freeze as a memory, something that never happened yet, but would happen in the future, passed over her.
"Race you to the big pine tree!" Stormpaw mewed as he sprinted off in a head start. "Oh, no you don't!" Within seconds, Moonpaw caught up with him, then passed him. "Stupid furball." She meowed, her whiskers twitching in amusement. Stormpaw caught up with her. "I let you win." He teased. "Sure you did." Moonpaw said innocently. "Like you let me win the day before, the day before that, and the day before that."
She was whisked back into the present just as quickly as she left. She blinked at the tiny kit, certain. When the dark times come and I don't know who to trust, this kit will be the only one I can turn to. I can't escape from destiny, so I might as well accept it.
