Snow got tired of how slow we were walking so she ran off and told us we’ll see her at the dorm. I was alone with Shard once again. He seemed to be deep in his own thoughts, for a change. I couldn’t help but smile. I tried my best not to but I was unsuccessful at that. I mentally shook myself as I realised I was about to step on a cat. I stopped walking and looked at the cat. It was a fluffy cat with pure white fur. The cat started to circle my feet while purring and rubbed its head against my legs. I was about to bend down and pet it when another cat came out from the shadows. Then another came, and another, and another. What the hell! Why are there so many cats in a school?
They all started purring and circling my feet. I stooped and started to pet them all. I made sure to scratch each one behind the ear, at least once. Shard picked up one cat and started to snuggle with it. It was a beautiful, white Persian cat, that had a baby blue, polka dot, bow clipped onto its fur. I raised an eyebrow at him.
“What? I love cats and this one just so happens to be mine. Her name is Snowball.” He said nonchalantly.
“I see. I love all animals.” I said in return.
“And they seem to love you.” He pointed at all of them.
“I guess. So what’s with all the cats?” I asked.
“All animals roam free in this school. There are dogs, cats, snakes, birds and a whole bunch of other animals. Eventually one of them choose you and that would be your pet. Well more like you’re their pet since they choose you. It’s weird that all of them took a liking to you, especially since they all already have owners. When they choose their 'person’'they prefer to stay with them and not really take a liking to other people.”
“Oh, jeez, that’s just to tell you that no matter where I go I will always remain a freak.”
He put down his cat, Snowball, and said, “You’re not a freak. You’re unique…special.”
“That doesn’t help.”
He sighed then motioned for me to continue walking. I got up and was about to start walking when I heard a growl come from behind me. Shard froze and looked like he was about to be sick. I saw a hint of black fur with white tiger stripes at the corner of my eye. Shard started to whisper something but I couldn’t quite make out what he was saying. I think he was praying.
“Alexis, don’t move.” He said only a little above a whisper.
“Why?” I said quietly.
“Just don’t move. That is the tiger of the school, and no one has ever owned him. He won’t let anyone come near him. If you get too close he would kill you with one quick pounce and bite. Trust me, just, shhh. Hopefully he would walk away.”
I didn’t pay attention to Shard. I wanted to see what this tiger looked like. I turned around and was now facing it. Shard might have said that I was facing Death itself. It had black fur with white stripes and looked very much like a shadow. It was mainly black with a touch of white. It was, like, really big and fluffy. Not furry, but fluffy (there’s a difference). The tiger started to move closer toward me. Shard finally turned around.
“Run, Alexis! Run!” I heard him shout in my head.
“No! Stay calm. Trust me.” I said through thought trying to calm his nerves.
“I told you, there is no way anyone can be owned by that tiger!”
“Shhhhhh! You just wait and see. Something about it is just telling me that he belongs to me.”
