The work day went by pretty quickly. I was so thankful to get done with today. But sadly, Aunt Matilda was in a bad mood. She didn't say a word until we walked into the penthouse.
" Now I see why your parents gave you to me! You're a piece of work!" She screamed.
" What'd I do?" I asked.
" The question is what DIDN'T you do!! You just say on your phone or played on a computer all day!" she bellowed.
" Well you didn't tell me to do something. If you had, I would've gladly helped you," I said calmly.
" No you wouldn't have," Aunt Matilda replied.
" Ok whatever," I said walking to my room.
I slammed the door and flipped on my bed. I was so stressed out from this lady! I screamed in my pillow until my voice gave out. I rolled onto my back, and my phone rang. The caller Id beamed with my best friend's name.
" Hi Serena," I said sadly.
" Talk to me girl. What's wrong? Did that aunt of yours stick a clothes rack up your-"
" No. Although she is the reason for my upcoming depression and headache," I said rubbing my temple.
" How's the city?? Is it as bad as everyone says it is?" Serena asked.
" Yeah, I guess. It's really really big. And noisy. And just dirty and disgusting. By dirty, I mean trashy. Not even " dirt" dirty. It's horrible here." I complained.
" I am so sorry for you. If I could I would come to get you."
" Thanks. Look, I got to go. I need to go take a shower," I said.
" Okay. I miss you Lai," Serena said.
" I miss you too," I managed to get out before I hung up.
I gathered some clothes and took a shower. As I let the hot water run over me, I pretended I was playing in the river back home. I stayed in there as long as I could until the water turned freezing cold. I dried off and went downstairs to eat after I got dressed.
Aunt Matilda and I didn't look at each other as we silently ate another vegetarian meal. I went upstairs to my room again after I finished eating. Even after I met Martin, I hate it here. I'll never ever ever like this place.
I drifted off to sleep thinking about home.
