The next day, after Scott and Mitch had finished their classes, the two went out to meet Avi for dinner. They stopped at a simple place (McDonald's) because they were cheap and poor thanks to college.
Scott bit his thumb nail nervously as he waited, meanwhile Mitch just sat in his phone texting. But when the brunette looked up and over to Scott, he let out a sigh, "Scott, relax, I'm positive that Avi likes you. Just get to know him, let him get to know you." Mitch said in a kind, assuring tone. Scott nodded and took a few deep breaths before he saw Avi walk in, then he quickly stopped.
Avi smiled as he walked up to them, taking a seat, "Hey Mitch, how's it going?" He asked kindly. "Good. Busy day." Mitch smiled. Avi turned his head to Scott, "And you? How are you doing today, Scott?" He asked politely. "I- f-fine I guess." Scott stuttered nervously, blushing a bit when Avi chuckled lightly. "I'm not laughing at you I promise. It's just cute." Avi smiled. But it must have been contagious because Scott smiled back.
Mitch started a conversation for a few minutes before "work called". In reality he wanted Scott to be alone with Avi, so he set an alarm to go off ten minutes into the conversation and joined them in conversation. "You two crazy kids have fun. I want this one home before dark." Mitch smiled as he hugged Scott, then he walked away and left the two alone.
Scott looked as Mitch left them. "Do you want to eat something?" Avi asked politely. "I-" he began, stopping for a long pause. "Yes please." Scott said softly. He skipped lunch to do a project for one of his classes, and he knew if Mitch found out he didn't eat something he'd force him to eat what he cooked. And no offense to Mitch, he was already his best friend, but he wasn't the best cook.
Scott let Avi pick something for him as he got ketchup and drinks for the both of him. While Avi got himself a cup of root beer, Scott couldn't resist the Dr. Pepper logo taunting him. One they had their drinks, Avi let Scott choose a place for them to sit. He looked around for a moment before choosing a booth in the corner where no one was.
They took a seat across from each other and Avi crack another award-winning smile as he looked at Scott. "So, do you mind telling me about yourself? It doesn't have to be much, of course, just so I can figure out exactly who Scott Hoying is." The deep-voiced man asked kindly. Scott looked down at his food, "Um, I don't really know what to say." He shrugged. "Tell me about your home. Your family. What you did as a kid. This is a process, Scott, we'll start off slow." Avi smiled. Scott nodded, "I was born and raised in Brighton." He began with a smile.
"It was just me and my mom for my whole life. After my dad died from cancer, she never wanted to find anyone else. She owned a small bakery, when I graduated high school I went to work for her. But she wanted more for me, so I started school, now med school. But the best school I found was in America, so she paid for the plane ticket and I'm using my saving for college." Scott explained. Avi nodded as he listened to Scott closely, paying attention to every word. "My mom used to tell me these stories when I was younger, about my dad. He was a good man." Scott sighed before wiping his tears away. "I'm sorry." He said after a moment.
"You have nothing to apologize for, Scott. It's a hard thing loosing a parent." Avi said softly. Scott nodded, "I know, I just- I finally get to do this sort of thing and I ruin it by crying half way through." He sighed. "You didn't ruin anything, I like a man that shows emotion. It's a hard subject to talk about when you loose a parent, don't apologize for grieving." Avi said with a soft smile. "I know but- it's just- it's been a while since he-" Scott began, stopping to sigh because he knew if he continued he'd start sobbing. "Nothing is ruined. I'm having a good time with you. I want to know these sort of things about you, Scott. What you like, what you've been through, your opinion, everything." Avi smiled.
