For a second I just stood there in total shock. I couldn't believe that Matt had actually done this for me when we weren't even officially dating.
"Matt, this is unbelievable! I can't believe you did this for me!" I ran into his arm almost knocking him off his feet and crushed my lips against his. He stumbled a bit before finding his feet and kissing me back passionatly. I wanted this moment to last forever.
"Anything for you m'lady," Matt laughed as we pulled away from the kiss. He laced his fingers in mine and lead me towards the gazebo. Like a true gentleman he pulled my chair out for me and made sure I was comfortable.
"So, what food do we have tonight sir?" I asked in a pretend posh voice as Matt opened up the picnic basket.
"Well we have an assortment of things m'lady. Firstly I brought along some homemade pizza for dinner and then for dessert I have made us a triple fudge chocolate cake," He bowed as he held out a plate of pizza.
"Matt, how did you know that those were my favourites?" I giggled.
"It's not hard Tay. First of all everyone likes pizza and secondly, who doesn't like chocolate cake?"
"Yeah I guess that's true," I laughed and eyed the pizza hungrily as my stomach gave a loud growl. Luckily I didn't have to wait long as Matt placed the slice infront of me and I devoured it within minutes. I would usually have been a bit more careful when eating on a first date and eaten a bit more gracefully but around Matt I knew I could be myself.
"Wow Tay you actually beat me, I'm only half way through and your finished," He chuckled through a mouthful of pizza.
"What can I say, I'm a fast eater when I want to be," I winked at him playfully. We talked about school and the beach, basically anything that came to mind. That's what I liked about Matt. There was always something to talk about and never an awkward silence. After a while I brought up the subject I had been dreading, "Hey Matt, can you believe that its been almost 2 months since you know... the incident?" That's what we had been calling it now.
"Yeah, time flys doesn't it," He looked solemnly at his pizza, "I can't believe Shay has been leaving us alone all that time since the locker thing, she hasn't done anything else to either of us. Maybe she is getting over her whole revenge idea,"
"Well not exactly," I hesitated. Did I really want to tell him about the bathroom and my snowglobe?
"Tay, what's happened that you haven't told me?" He stopped eating his pizza and wiped his hands on a napkin to show he wasn't eating again until I told him the story. So I did. I told him all about what Shay had written on the mirror and my snowglobe and as I got further into the story his face started to turn a dark shade of red.
"I can't believe she would do that to you!" He slammed his hand on the table. Why had I brought this up?
"Matt I'm sorry I shouldn't have said anything. I didn't want to ruin our date but I felt like I had to tell you. And I can believe she would do this to me because I also did something terrible to her," I looked up at him with watery eyes. The tears were ready to fall but I wasn't going to let them.
"Tayla what we have done doesn't compare to what she is doing to you right now," He reached over and brushed a fallen strand of hair behind my ear.
"But Matt, I'm with her ex boyfriend. I'm with my best friends ex boyfriend! I know to guys this isn't as bad but to girls, it is the first rule of being a best friend: Don't ever go out with your friends ex or someone they have been interested in," I looked down at the table ashamed with myself.
"I know that's how it works but why should we have to hide our feelings because of my past relationship?"
"I just feel so horrible but at the same time I feel happy that I can be with you but then I feel even more guilty for feeling like that and it all just goes in one vicious cycle of feelings," I rambled loudly feeling my face going redder with each word.
"Tayla, we are going to fix this okay. How about tomorrow at school you and I both go up to Shay and talk to her alone and see if we can make some peace with this whole situation? We have given her two months to cool down," Matt explained softly.
"Obviously she hasn't cooled down much if she is willing to break into my room," I replied harshly.
"Look we can do this okay. I promise this will be fixed," He stroked my cheek and I titled my head into his hand, "Now lets have some of this chocolate cake," He smiled cheekily at me and opened up the picnic basket to reveal the most amazing chocolate cake I had ever seen in my life.
After we devoured half of the chocolate cake between us we were both well and truly stuffed to the brim with food. I held my stomach and laughed, "I don't think I have ever been this full in my life!"
"Me neither," Matt groaned and I couldn't help but laugh at the pained expression on his adorable face.
"Hey I've got an idea but it's kinda lame," I smiled shyly at him.
"What is it?" He smiled back at me.
"Will you look at the stars with me?" Without missing a beat Matt got up from his chair and pulled me up. We made our way to a patch of grass that looked nice and comfy and laid down next to eachother with our shoulders touching and our fingers tangled. We stared up at the stars and tried to connect them to make funny pictures. We told eachother stories and reminisced on our childhood together.
An hour later Matt reminded me that we had to be home for curfew. I reluctantly got up from the comfy grass and helped him clean up the gazebo and pack up the picnic basket. Once we were back in his warm car I laid my head on his shoulder and sighed.
"What's up Tay," Matt asked reading my sigh totally wrong.
"Nothing, that was a happy sigh. I just can't believe how fast this whole thing is going!"
"And by "thing" you mean?" He chuckled.
"Us of course," I slapped his chest lightly.
"Aah so theirs an us now?" He teased.
"N-no I mean I guess, I don't know," I stuttered stupidly.
"Tayla I was kidding of course their is an us," He kissed my forehead as I fell asleep on his shoulder with only the sound of the road filling my mind as I slept.
The next day was the day Matt and I had agreed to talk to Shay and see if we could make peace with her. We both arrived at school early and met in the carpark so that we could find Shay together. We didn't hold hands as we didn't think Shay would want to see that when we were trying to get her to not hate our guts. We walked through the school gates and started to scan the hallways. I spotted Shay almost instantly. She was running into the girls bathroom and she looked like she was crying. I looked up at Matt, "I have this feeling that something is really wrong and since she has gone into the girls bathroom, I'm guessing I am going to have to face this alone," I smiled at him.
"You going to be okay?" He squeezed my hand and kissed my forehead.
"Yeah, I'll let you know how it goes," I squeezed his hand back and made my way to the girls bathroom. My heart was beating loud and fast and my palms started to sweat. I don't know why but right now I was petrified of facing Shay. I opened the toilet door and saw that all of the cubicles were empty except one, "Shay," I called softly but she didn't answer, "Shay it's me Tayla. I know you don't want to ever talk to me again and I understand that but I really need to tell you something," I stood infront of the door waiting for her to answer. But instead I saw the lock flick from red to green and the door opened slowly. I looked up and for the first time in two months I saw Shay Hayes face to face. And what I saw made a lump rise in my throat and my stomach clench.
