After a serious night of Vampire Diaries (We watched the entire first season) I woke up groggily regretting our decision to stay up so late. I squinted against the harsh sun and slowly got out of bed. I almost stepped on Madison as I swung my legs over the edge of my bed. I silently padded my way to the bathroom and had a nice relaxing shower to wake myself up. When I got back neither of them were awake yet so I decided breakfast would be the thing to get them up. My parents were sitting at the kitchen table when I got downstairs and they both exchanged a side ways glance before staring at me.
"What?" I muttered as I went to the fridge to find some bacon and eggs.
"Nothing," They both said in sync.
"Come on you guys, you suck at lying so just tell me what's going on," I put the eggs and bacon on the counter and folded my arms.
"It's Shay's parents, they rang her this morning," Mum said quietly.
"And? Whats going on?" I asked wide eyed.
"They don't want Shay staying here and they are going to be here in an hour to come and get her," Dad finished.
"What!? No! She can't go back there, her dad...he hit her!" I screamed. I couldn't believe this.
"We know sweety and when they get here your father and I are going to talk to them about all this, but it honestly isn't our place to say she can't go home. They are her parents and unfortunately because she isn't 18 she has to go with them," Mum sounded so worried and sad I felt bad.
"I can't believe this, how dare her father try to take her home after what he did to her!" I had liked Mr Hayes but now I couldn't have hated a person more in the world.
"Look sweety, how about you make some breakfast for the girls and try and enjoy the morning while your dad and I sort this out," Mum stroked my hair. I loved it when she did that.
"Okay, thanks guys. And I'm really sorry this has all happened, I never wanted you to get involved it's just I couldn't stand the thought of her living there with him when he had done that to her,"
"We understand, now get to cooking girl," Mum ruffled my hair and bumped my hip with hers as she laughed to herself. It was times like these when I noticed how much I looked like her. We both had the same colour hair and the same bright green eyes although my mum was a lot more petite than myself and I'm glad that I am like her.
I set the pans onto high and filled the room with the sizzling of eggs and bacon.
"Breakfast is served," I bowed as I put the plates into Shay and Madison's laps. I decided it was best we eat in my room just in case her parents came by.
"Tayla you didn't have to do this!" They both exclaimed as they started to eat.
"I wanted to, plus I had a great time last night," I smiled at them as I chewed on some bacon.
"Yeah me too, we should do it more often," Shay grinned, "Although I'll probably be here for a while so we can do this everynight, oh and you of course Madison," Shay beamed at the idea of staying with my family, little did she know that might come to an end today.
"Thanks you guys for you know, letting me be your friend," Madison blushed.
"Maddy of course!" I hugged her over my plate and then she turned to hug Shay. As we were finishing up breakfast that's when I heard the doorbell ring. "Shay how about you jump in the shower first seeing as I've already had one and Madison and I will clean up," I smiled at her as I practically pushed her into the bathroom. I didn't want her to hear any of the conversation downstairs just yet.
"Okay, so we still going to the shops today?" She asked through the door.
"You betcha," I yelled back although right now I wasn't too sure what would happen. Once I heard the water turn on I turned to Madison, "Her parents are here and they want her to come home!"
"What! But she doesn't want to!" Madison exclaimed.
"I know, my parents are going to talk to them but ultimately her parents are the ones who choose," I replied sadly.
10 minutes later Shay returned from the bathroom in a pair of black jeans, purple top and a black cardigan. She looked great as always. I motioned for Madison to have a shower and then it was just me and Shay.
"Hey wanna go down stairs?" I asked Shay quietly.
"Um okay, why?" Shay asked with a confused expression.
"No reason just thought we could get some orange juice or something," I replied lamely, god I was bad at this. I lead her out of my room and down the stairs and there were her parents at our kitchen table. The conversation looked pretty calm considering the circumstances.
"Mum, dad?" I heard Shay ask from behind me.
"Hey sweety," Her dad got up and made his way over to Shay but she took a step backwards.
"Don't come near me!" She yelled.
"Sweety don't be like that, come on we can work this out," He stepped towards her again but she just took another back.
"Dad, we can't work this out! Look at what you did!" She screamed as she pointed the now yellowing bruise around her eye.
"I didn't mean to, I'm sorry just please come home," He begged with her.
"Dad, if that is your apology then I am most certainly never stepping foot in that house again!" Shay had tears streaming down her face. I stood there not knowing what to do and I looked over at her mum, she had a tear travelling down her face too.
"I don't know what else to say other than that you don't have a choice, you have to come with us!" Mr Hayes face began to redden with anger.
"No I won't!" Shay yelled back.
"Oh yes you will," Mr Hayes grabbed Shay's arm and started to pull her towards the door as she kicked and screamed.
"Dad ow you're hurting me OW!" She screamed.
I couldn't take this any longer. I ran up to Mr Hayes and tried to pry his hand off of Shay's arm, "Let go of her!" I screamed. I felt a swift slap to my face and I fell to the floor. He had slapped me! Mr Hayes had slapped me, right infront of my own parents. I heard my parents chairs fall over as they ran to my side. My mum helped me up and cradled me against her like a child.
"How dare you hit my daughter you monster!" My dad yelled into Mr Hayes face.
"I'm sorry mate but she got in the way, now just let us take Shay home before we cause your family anymore trouble," Mr Hayes stated.
"Like hell your taking Shay home, you don't deserve to be a parent, first you hit your own child and then you hit mine? Where the hell are your morals you bastard!" My dad screamed at him, his own face going red.
"Fine, you want her you can keep her," Mr Hayes let go of Shay's arm and looked her in the eyes with a cold look, "Maria come on we're leaving," He motioned for his wife to follow him. She reluctantly got up from the table and stroked Shay's hair before giving her a kiss on the forehead, "NOW!" Mr Hayes yelled. Mrs Hayes jumped at the sound of his voice and scuttled out of our house.I felt sorry for Shay's mum but she hadn't even tried to help Shay, although maybe Mr Hayes had as much of a hold over Mrs Hayes as he did over Shay, well not anymore.
Shay ran to me, "I am so so sorry Tay I can't believe he did that!" She hugged me and kissed my hair.
"I-it's okay, I'm fine," I stammered. For a while we all just stood there. Shay and I hugging, my mum stroking our hair and my dad leaning against the wall with his head in his hands.
"I'm calling the police," My dad finally said, and he picked up the phone and dialed 000.
I'm from Australia so our emergency hotline is 000 for those who are wondering :)
