Chapter Sixteen
The knife slashed at the air just above my head as I ducked down. A hand from behind me shooting forward to wrap around my opponent's neck. A startled gasp slipped out of his mouth. His hand flying up to the wrist of his new opponent grasping even with the knife still in his hand. I quickly looked away in time to see another rebel charging our way.
This was how each battle went. Those who followed the rebel alphas willingly fought to get to me. My people tried to constantly defend me as I defended myself. Most of the time it was only one rebel at a time, but once in a while, multiple rebels came at me together. None have yet to seriously injure me because my men and wolves work so well together.
I took the impact head on letting his momentum push me back as I pulled him off balance with me. We shifted and then he found himself on his back as I hovered over him. The look of shock written all over his face as the wind got knocked out of him.
Realization hit him that I was the one on top and he shook out of his shock. His brows furling into a deep scowl. But his eyes were saying something totally different. Not the heated anger that the others had when they looked at me.
Then the pin dropped loudly in my ears. He was part of Roughe's pack. He was acting like he wanted me dead for the benefit of the rebels. Only to prove he wasn't on our side even if it were the farthest thing from the truth.
Struggling underneath of me. I kept him pinned down with very little effort. I grunted in show too as if holding him still was difficult.
Next thing I knew, I was on my own back as he somehow twisted us around. He didn't stay pinning me down because there was an impact to his shoulder followed by another to his abdomen. The look of shock was back on his face as his eyes filled with pain. A howl of anger sounded before the rebel's horn of retreat.
The guy fell backward with a painful grunt and hiss through his teeth. As the rebels fled the battlefield as they had, I moved over to him and put pressure on each other the wounds. "Just stay with me."
He grinned despite everything. "It matters not my Queen. Getting close to you was all I needed to do. Even if I died, it would have been a success." He slipped his hand into his jacket and a dark skin colored hand shoot out to rip his hand front retrieving what he was going for.
Ian frowned when his eyes focused on a folded piece of paper that was in the man's hand. "What the...?" He gently brought the guys wrist back down.
The man was chuckling thought with a bit of difficulty. "Good to see how quick you are to keep our Queen safe from any harm." He smirked at Ian. "Even from a tiny piece of paper."
I held back my giggled when Ian rolled his eyes and snatched the paper out of the guy's hand. My hands keeping pressure on the man's wounds as Ian's eyes took in what was written on the piece of paper. Though whatever it said made Ian groan with a tinge of despair.
Placing the note inside of his tight black vest right into the chest pocket of the button down shirt, he wanted to keep it safe and secure. "We'll discuss it when we get back to the tent." His words held an ominous presence that no one could ignore.
A stretcher appeared next to us as a few of our rescue team came over. Ian helped to move me away when the rescuers took over for me. They really didn't have to see if I was alright because Ian and my own personal guards always looked after me. I was their first priority so the teams could concentrate on those who fight and the injured no matter the side.
Daemon raced over to me pushing people out of the way. His arms engulfing me as they always did after a battle in which we were separated like we just had been. Worry giving way to relief as he took in several lungs full of my scent to easy him back to his normal levels.
