The Christmas music rings in the entire manor which is starting to make me crazy. We unfortunately succeeded to spend a meal without killing each other. We must believe that its the magic of the holidays. While everybody is dancing and drinking, Im sitting on the couch, asking myself what we missed in the manor of the spirit. I continue to think deep inside me that it was too easy. That we were played. My gaze lays on Jake and Maya, dancing together as if they were alone in this world. All this situation is way too much for me. I need a drink. I get up to head towards the minibar between the kitchen and the living room and I see Carl sitting on the floor against the wall. To see him like that is a terrible torture. I dont even remember the last time we talked like we did before. He has a bottle of Tequila half empty in his hands. His eyes are red and his skin his pale. He almost looks like a vampire or a zombie. I sit down discreetly beside him, taking the bottle from his hand to take a sip. I grimace and wipe my mouth with the back of my hand.

I dont understand where I lost her

He takes back the Tequila and I lean my head against the wall, sighing.

Dont put that on your fault. She was my best friend and I didnt even know her.

Maybe, but I knew her. I spent all my life loving her and she loved me in return. I couldnt even see what she was preparing.

I close my eyes to concentrate on the music.

She chose David. She had the choice between her best friend, her boyfriend and her childhood friend. We are scattered now.

I open my eyes and turn my head towards him, letting escape a tear.

We are falling one by one, he whispers.

I let my head falls on his shoulder and he lay his frail and cold hand on mine.

Its exactly what they want, he continues, the children of the spirit. They destroy us from the inside. They use our strongest emotions and they use it to manipulate us.

I release my hand from his and get up.

We wont let them do it, Carl. I promise you that, one day, everything will return in order. We will be he four of us reunited again, I say.

He nods, stifling a laugh in his bottle. I rapidly go to the bathroom and lock myself in. I lean against the border of the sink and look up to my reflection. How could I be so naïve? A tear rolls on my cheek. Repress your feelings, Tess Repress them and everything will be okay I shake my head to recover from my emotions. I wash my hands and Im ready to return to the party and prove to everybody that Im fine. I return to the living room and notice that Carl decided to return with the others too.

Tessa! Sam exclaims with Sophie on his knees.

I sit on the couch in front of them, between Thomas and Chris.

Hey, I mumble without conviction.

Isnt she beautiful, my sister? Sam says for Thomas.

Sophie burst out laughing and I understand that some people here are completely drunk.

Not as much as Maya, Miranda rectifies, stretching her legs on the carpet.

I lower my gaze toward her and smile hypocritically. Still makes me prettier than you!

No! No! Dont start! Leila bawls. Life is pretty! You have to think about these butterflies who are searching for the right side of the wind!!!

We all ignore her, at least, those who havent lost their minds yet.

Its you who said it, Tessa, Miranda continues, we could ask Jake.
