ONE YEAR LATER

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP

Stupid alarm clock! I slowly open my eyes and stop the ringing of this infernal device. I let out a long sigh, realising what day it is. I get out of my bed and the contact of the cold floor under my bare feet makes me shiver. I get out of my bedroom and the light of the day blinds me as I make a ponytail with my hair. I go down the little kitchen of my apartment located in the middle of the city. I open my window to water my plants and herbs. I finally make myself a cereal bowl and sit at the table, grabbing my cellphone on the way. I immediately smile when I see the million texts messages from my best friend who is wishing me happy birthday. I jump when I see Cerafina climb on the table beside me.

Good morning, my love, I say, scratching the top of her head, you came to wish me happy birthday too?

She meows and after rubbing her little head against mine, she escapes to the living room. I smile, shaking my head slightly. I would have liked my parents to be there for my 18th birthday. They could have come and see Cerefina who misses her masters a lot. But we concluded that it was preferable for me to move out to another country with the cat to keep me company. I finish my meal rapidly and run to get dressed. I make a bun with my hair at the speed of the light and grab my bag, running towards the exit. On my way out, I hit a frame that was hanging on the wall and it falls and shatters on the ground.

Shit, I mumble. I turn the picture around and my heart squeezes instantly. Its Thomas and I, camping when we were 9 years old. I pick up rapidly the pieces of glass and the picture and throw everything in the garbage. Finally, Im ready to leave. I lock the door and jump in my used car. I start my way towards Gabriellas house, the most awesome girl I know. I open the window to let the delicious breeze of early summer in my car. I park in front of her house, waiting patiently for her to come out. Finally, I see her golden hair shine under the sun. I always feel a hint of jealousy as I observe the beauty of her hair. A mix of honey, gold and topaz while mine are grey like a stormy sky or like clouds before a storm. She gets in the car all excited and starts:

So! I made a thorough research on the new people in school. They are triplets! Liam, Nick and Sarah! By the way, this famous Liam is single and really sexy! And, hes 18! Like you today! Im so jealous! Youll be able to go to the bars this summer while Ill still be 17! Oh, and happy birthday! But do you realise! Youre literally the oldest of our gang, youll be able to get us beer! Maybe we could make me a fake I.D?

Hello to you too, I sigh with a smile.

She smiles to me and takes out her phone from her pocket to tap on hit.

If Im the oldest its because I had to catch up a year, I already told you!

Did you organize a big party? she says excitedly, hopping on her seat.

No I thought I would stay calm. I have an exam to review for Monday.

Okay, she sighs, but you could at least come to my place after class?

Yeah, I sigh.

I listen to her talk for the rest of the way, trying to concentrate on the road. We finally arrive at school, and I am hardly out of my car as Melissa, Simon, Stephanie and Matt jump on me.

Happy birthday! they exclaimed together.

Stop, I beg them, I dont want everybody to know.

Melissa takes me in her arms rapidly and puts her red hair back in place, staring at me with her sparkling green eyes. Did you plan something?

You know our little Tess, Simon laughs, wiping his glasses on his T-shirt, she prefers staying in the shadows and not attracting too much attention.
