Chapter 3: A Fight of the First Years

As Daichi, Suga and Tanaka make their way to the clubroom, silence fills them, leaving their mind to wander their respective thoughts.

For Daichi, his thoughts were mostly of the two in the gym earlier, and what to do about them. They were suspicious of him and his friends, that's for sure. Their trust issues definitely haven't gotten any better, given the hostile and terrified reactions they received earlier. Daichi didn't want to leave their meeting at that, but he knew that if they stayed any longer, things would have escalated. The best he could do was to give them space to calm down so they're at least a little less unfriendly with the others. If they didn't change things soon, what they saw a year ago at the Junior Boys' Volleyball team would repeat. Of course, they could always just bench them until things get fixed. But with that quick of theirs, Karasuno could make a comeback. However, that wasn't the only reason. He doesn't want to leave them feeling like that: hopeless. Though they can be aggressive and emphatic, the fear that haunted their eyes tugged at his heart. He didn't like that look and couldn't help but wonder what caused them to have it in the first place. Exactly what and - more importantly - who forced them to be so wary of others? Whatever it was, he hopes he can help them out before him and the other 3rd years graduate. For his sake, their sake, and their Volleyball careers sake.

As for Suga, his mind was mostly filled with mental notes he took of the first year pair's behavior. The way Kageyama was the only one who talked didn't go past his notice. Even then spoke the bare minimum, whether out of disinterest or fear, he couldn't figure out. He already figured out how to peg each of them: Kageyama is more of the spoke's person between the two. He'll interact with others when needed, but nothing more. Not only that, but he seems to act as Hinata's protector, given by the natural reaction he had when moving to stand in front of Hinata. That could be troublesome in the future since that most likely means Kageyama's protective of Hinata; not that it'll matter at the moment since the latter seems to prefer it that way. Speaking of the latter, Suga can't help but note that he'll be the more difficult one to talk to. He remains unresponsive to others, showing no emotion other than fear; but even then, it looked like it was trying to be concealed. He'll rely on Kageyama, which is good in its own sense since he seems to be what keeps Kageyama grounded. However, it won't do any good in this kind of sport since everyone should be relying on one another as a group, not just one person. It's going to be hard to get to know them, but Suga's determined to help them out. Just like Daichi, he suspects that something has happened in their past, since one does not become that wary without the world fucking up their life in one way or another. Whatever it as that happened, he hopes he'll be able to help. The scared look each one held was enough to make Suga cry had it been on purpose. The only thing that stopped him was when he saw Kageyama's look become hard an instant later, proving to him that they didn't mean any ill harm. They really were just scared.

As for Tanaka, his thoughts were actually quite jumbled, bouncing back and forth between feeling guilty for scaring the two first years, and at being surprised that The Royal Duo he and his two comrades went to watch a year ago came to his school: Karasuno High. He's confused on why they choose this school out of all the other schools since their quick is insane, good enough for even Shiratorizawa. He just doesn't understand it; that is, until he remembers the events that happened in that Community Centre one year ago: The fight that broke out between the teammates of Kitagawa, the punches thrown between the members, the fear clouding that ginger's eyes. He never mentioned it to his friends, but during the match they played against Yukigaoka, Tanaka couldn't help but notice the wide-eyed look Hinata would get whenever a teammate of his was too close to him. It went so far to making him hesitate when player 6 came a little too close, causing him to flinch, slightly delaying his jump when running to spike. They still got the ball through, but at a bit of an awkward angle. This, of course, didn't go unnoticed by the raven haired setter as he stepped slightly forward, towering him in what he assumed was a way for them to gain some privacy. They talked for a bit until the referee blew his whistle. By then Kageyama seemed satisfied. Despite their solution, the issue was still there. Even at a natural distance between his personal space, Hinata seemed uncomfortable, only ever letting his raven haired friend into close proximity. It was weird to Tanaka. He would've asked, but the way Daichi and Suga were talking about their behavior that day implied that he shouldn't. However, what he was scared of most was what caused them to be like that; 'cause from what he's hearing, it sounded like some sort of abuse. He didn't like the sound of that.
