I am still in shock. My own mother.. trying to.. I don't even know what she was doing to Violet. She was holding her hands above Violet's face, and mumbling weird words. They weren't even in English. Plus, that red light glowed from her hands. How is that even possible for her? I mean, no one can even do that without a little technology?
I looked at Violet with concern. "Are you okay?" I asked her. Seriously, she looks more pale than usual. Was this the first time our mom has done that? My question is more like: WHY DID SHE ATTACK ME? All of these thoughts kept popping in my head... and... I don't... -
"Kris, I'm fine... Kris, are you there?" She waved her hand in front of me.
"Huh? Oh, yes!" I said quickly, snapping out of my train of thoughts.
We were sitting in the woods. Not that far away from Alex's house. In fact, we could see his backyard. Not much of a backyard. Just a kidswing-set, a garden of red tulips, and other god forsaken weird looking flowers...
"Okay, I'm just making sure you're alright."
"Why me, she was the one doing something to YOU."
"Yea, but she attacked you so..."
"I'm sorry, it is just.. you don't expect your mother to do something like that.." My voice cracked when I said mother. Not that I never really liked my mother. She was so bossy, and, controlling. No, who was I kidding. My mother was always here for me. Whenever I needed her, she was there. Now, she's gone. I only hoped this was a dream... but it isn't, is it?
"I don't think any of us would, Kris. We need to start paying attention to ourselves, and, watch our back. Who knows, she can't be the only one like that..."
"Of course not," Alex responded as he returned to us. He went to grab us some supplies from inside his house. Just a couple of kit-kats, lollipops, sodas...
"Alex, this isn't Healthy. Can we please get something healthier? Like for instance, a banana?"
Alex bursts out laughing. "Banana, seriously!" I could tell she didn't understand because she look quite confused.
"No it is nothing Violet, just ignore him."
"No no, sorry about that..." He took in a deep breath and looked at Violet for a brief moment before sitting down. Followed by a long silence...
"Where do we go?" I finally say.
We didn't have anywhere to go. Nor anyone we could trust, besides Alex, and I don't think his mom would like having kids from next door living there for a while.
What we needed, was a safe haven. Somewhere where we wouldn't have to worry about... soul suckers. Or, whatever she or he was.
"I don't know, but it is better than living with her.." I could tell there was something wrong with her. Something... missing? "Just, we have to go, now, before she finds us."
"No, lie low for now. If she knows, it will be easier for her to capture you guys," Alex said. He pushed his glasses up with his pointer finger. Looking at me, then back at Violet. You could tell he was worried, and wanted to say something.. but he never did.
"I agree. Violet, let's just relax, okay?"
"Relax? RELAX! THAT'S ALL YOU EVER DO! Listen, we need to just run. We can't stay here. She'll do the same thing to you Kris!" She blurted, "I can't risk you, and, as much as I hate saying this, I love you, and I can't lose my only SEMI-NORMAL family, okay?"
I sighed.
It was nice that she admitted I was normal. Well - semi, at least, but I knew we couldn't stay this close to their house. Alex's house. It is endangering Alex, his sister, brother, mother, and father. I didn't want them to get involved, too. "I suppose, okay. Just calm down then. We'll hang here for a few hours, then go. It is safer that way," I said.
"I agree," Alex said aloud. The lenses of his glasses shined as the moonlight glowed upon them.
"Ugh, fine...." Violet agreed. Why was she so stubborn?
. . . .
We waited there for what seemed forever. Violet fell asleep next to the tree. I gave her my sweater so should wouldn't get cold or anything.
I sat up against the tall pine tree, looking up at the stars. The night was crisp and windy. I was a bit cold myself, but I don't want Violet to get cold... I looked over to where she slept.
She looked like a child!
Ignoring that fact, I noticed Alex still hasn't returned. He's taking his sweet time... I need my rest, so I guess I'll have to wait tomorrow for the food.
I laid down on my back, looking up at the stars as my vision faded into black, and I was asleep.
. . . .
The very next morning was cold and damp. It must have rained while I was asleep. My clothes were soaked, but Violet laid in the forest of trees. So, that doesn't surprise me that she isn't soaked, like me.
"Good morning, you two," I could hear a familiar voice. It was Alex!
"Why didn't you come at all last night! I was worried sick that you might've forgotten us!"
"Sorry, my mom caught me sneaking food and going outside. So I got grounded... I can't have any video games anymore, for this week anyway."
"Sorry, is that, food?" I exclaimed as I crawled over to the pile of snacks he dropped from under his sweat shirt. He bent down, and plopped right on the ground across from me. "Man, I'm starving!" I said as I grabbed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich from the pile.
"You act like you haven't ate anything in ages!" He said as he grabbed a package of skittles from the pile. Ripping off the top of the package, then tilting the bag so several skittles would fall in his mouth.
"Well, it isn't like I eat whenever I'm hungry?" I said with a mouthful of the Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich.
"True, if I did that, I bet my family would be poor or something." Alex said finally swallowing the herd of rainbow skittles in his mouth.
A shadow covered my light glimpse of sunshine I had. Due to all of the rainclouds still in the sky.
"If you two will stop joking around and hurry up, we could report the incident from last night -"
"To who?" I nearly choked on my sandwich as I gobbled the rest up.
"I don't know? There's bound to be someone out there who would know..." She said silently. I almost felt bad for her.
"Look, Violet," I stood up. Flipping my hair only but once, and then looked at her straight in the eyes. Wow, I have amazing eyes. I mean, we're twins. So, I have the same eyes. Isn't that cool? "There is no one but us who knows about this, and, I don't think anyone else knows what to say about this. I bet people think would think we're insane if we told them our mother was practically sucking the life out of you," I turned to look at Alex. "He or if it's a girl.. may know what happened, but he or she doesn't know what it really was.. nor what it feels like, or looks for that matter." I turned back to Violet. Holding my breath, for a long time until finally letting go, and just plopped on the ground. Without even looking at Violet.
"We just have to watch our backs for now," I said smiling a little. This adventure sounds quite fun.
"We better get going. Someone's watching us," Alex pointed over to the edge of the forest, where it trailed off into my backyard. I could see... a floating figure? It glowed blue. Staring straight back at Violet and I, with blood red eyes. Like the glowing red... that light... from our mom's hands.
The memory slowly creeped back into my mind.
I immediately push the thought away, as soon as I start thinking about it.
"Run!" I shout, leaving the food behind, I grabbed Violet by the arm, and shoved her forward. She nearly fell, but, she got the hang of it.
We ran. Knowing that, if that thing came near us, could it do the same thing as our mom, or worse?
He.. well I should say it, didn't even look... human, at all.
