One Step Closer (Wayo)

Ming walks me to work and we separate at the main door. I wave goodbye happily and watch him walk away. He looks back and I wave. He has a hard time saying goodbye sometimes as this pattern is repeated until he's out of sight. My silly husband.

Once he finally leaves my sight I turn and head down to HR. I get there and greet the staff happily. Why wouldn't I? This is the best day ever. I wait patiently to be called back which doesn't take long because I'm the only one in here.

"Khun Daichapanya. This way please." An older lady calls.

I follow her to her cubicle and have a seat. She pulls out a stack of papers and sets them down.

"Congratulations on your full time position. We just have a few things to go over and some papers to fill out. You'll get your new ID badge when you graduate and we get your official transcripts. Do you understand?"

"Yes I do." I say smiling widely.

I see her smiling as she starts going over everything. By the end I have to admit that my enthusiasm died just a bit. But now it's over and I will be an official employee in four short weeks. I want to go tell the Pii's first so I call P'Kit.

"Pii. Are you in your office? I want to talk to you." I ask as soon as he answers.

"No nong. Oh wait, I see you right now. We're in the cafeteria." He says.

I turn and see him waving at me. I walk to them and offer a wai then take a seat.

"Guess what? I've been offered one of the job openings! Isn't that fantastic?" I tell them.

OK maybe I'm a little excited if their facial expressions say anything. Hey, I bet they were excited when they went through this last year. Their reactions are in no way affecting my mood.

"Great news nong." Beam says then I see it.

"You already knew didn't you?" I ask looking closely at them.

They are avoiding eye contact, especially P'Kit.

"Oh! Your husband told you didn't he? Which means my husband told him! Oh he's in so much trouble when I get home." I mutter to myself.

"Hey nong, that doesn't make it any less great. We're really happy for you." P'Pha says.

"Thanks Pii." I say but I'm still sulking. Just a little bit.

"Nong, you're being silly." P'Beam says ruffling my hair.

"Want an ice cream?" P'Kit offers.

The answer is always yes to ice cream. He leaves as soon as the smile crosses my face. Soon he returns with my favorite ice cream and I sit happily eating it.

"You're so easy to please. Are you happy?" P'Kit asks.

"I am. I really wanted to work here." I say.

"I have to admit, I like this hospital a lot and it helps that Beam and Kit are here." P'Pha says.

"Was it hard when you transitioned from intern to resident?" I ask in between licks.

"Not really, we just had more responsibilities than we did the day before. It was like the diploma meant we all of a sudden had more knowledge than we did the previous day." P'Kit says laughing at it.

"We adjusted quickly though and I'm sure you will too." P'Beam says with a smile.

"Hey do you guys want to get together tonight to celebrate?" I ask.

"We can't get together tonight but how about we celebrate your achievement this weekend?" P'Pha suggests.

"Yeah that would be great Pii." I say.
