"Yes Pii, I understand. Thank you for finding out." I hang up with P'Bee and hang my head.
Four days isn't a long time and we've already lost half of one just sitting here. I look down at Ming and run my hand over his face. Just like last time it's burning hot. The fever came about two hours ago. It's been nearly impossible to keep it down.
I start to cry again. I can't seem to stop. I look up and see that Hiro and P'Kong are just like me. They're hovering over their spouses and weeping because right now that's all we can do.
I look up as the door opens and in walks the research staff decked out in biogear.
"Hello gentlemen, if you're done crying we need to get to get to work. We're going to draw blood, a lot of it. We need all our scientists so pull on your big boy pants and let's go." The head researcher says.
We watch as vial after vial gets drawn. I'm squeezing Ming's hand. He would handle this situation so much better than I am. He's stronger.
"Alright, let's go save your people." He says and walks out.
I lean down and kiss his forehead.
"I love you so much. I'll find a way I promise. And if I don't, I will join you." I whisper into his ear.
I pass his mother whose look lets me know she heard what I said. I hug her then head to the lab.
Right. Big boy pants.
Hiro and I walk to the office and sit at our very empty desks. We notice that everyone is here and looking at us sympathetically. I can't help but feel touched by it. They don't have to help but they are here and willing.
I don't know what we're supposed to do, we don't have anything but blood. I feel defeated but I know I can't give up, not when my life is at stake.
"I've learned from Khun Daichapanya that we have four days from infection. Twelve hours have already gone by so that is the clock we need to keep an eye on." Our assistant director says.
All eyes go the large countdown clock on the wall. Nothing like large bright red numbers counting down to let you know just how little time you have.
"We have eight scientists here so we should be able to get this done." He adds.
"Who is the eighth scientist?" I ask as it occurs to me that we should only have seven.
"It's me of course. I'm still a scientist." He says looking slightly insulted.
I nod my head feeling slightly embarrassed.
"Don't worry, I didn't know who he was talking about either." Hiro says as he leans closer to me.
"Not to be a downer but how are we going to do anything? We don't even have computers, they were taken along with our data." I ask.
"Only a fool wouldn't have a backup of their work nong. Please tell me that you're not a fool." Khun Saejea says.
The last time I really spoke to him was when my breakfast with Ming was crashed and I was offered this job. Then again he didn't really talk he just watched everything happen.
"I'm not a fool Pii, just distraught. I didn't think about my backup." I admit.
"Of course not because you're focused on your husband but you're going to have to try to push that back. Be a scientist and find the cure." He councils.
"By the way, we won't need biohazard suits, she made the viruses DNA specific. I don't know how she got close enough to get DNA of our spouses, but at any rate no one else will get effected." I explain.
