"What?!" I pulled the gray jacket in my hands on, "What do you mean Jade bounced?" I looked at Alex who had Frances Eleanor in his arms while she chewed on his tie. He shrugged and I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose, Frances Eleanor's babysitter wasn't going to show today, "Well what do we do about her then?"
Alex shrugs, "We'll have to do what Maria does." He decided quietly, "Dad's at work and everybody else has school too. Maybe Theodosia can watch her during her free period after lunch but other than that, we have to. It's just what happens during parenthood I guess, things that you didn't plan for happen and you have to deal with it."
Why was he always right? "Well you have the tests today to confirm knowledge from the last semester so I guess that means I have to watch her..." I sighed, my classes didn't have much planned for today so I guess that's fine.
"But what about your biology and chemistry?" Alex asked and shuffled his feet awkwardly, "Since you have to dissect that sheep today and you're making hydrofluoric acid in chem." He looked at Frances Eleanor, "Not safe environments for a baby."
"Well for the biology I can just come in after school and dissect the lamb, my professor and very understanding and lets students do that all the time, by students I mean Maria, she's in bio too, remember?" Alex made a long o sound as he remembered and I continued, "And for chemistry...maybe after Theodosia's free period she hands her off to you? I have her for half the day and you have her for the other half. That way she won't be near the hydrofluoric acid." I smiled at the plan.
Alex shrugged, "Works for me." He handed her over and texted Theo while I quickly got her bag ready and pinned a rainbow badge on the front of her dinosaur jumper which she was in. After everything was settled I strapped her into her car seat and sat up front as Alex drove to King's.
The car ride was made in relative silence, Alex barely explaining that Jade couldn't make it because of her dog eating something or another and needed to go to the vet and she wanted to be with him, that was understandable so I wasn't angry with her. I just wish it could've happened on any other day since I had to do weird stuff today, I completely forgot about the hydrofluoric acid until Alex reminded me.
Well, whatever. We got to the school and I got out before getting the baby out, letting Alex wrap an arm around me as we headed inside. I didn't see Maria come up but soon I heard her, "Um hi." She was really shy for some reason, well, I shouldn't say that since I assume it's the way she has been treated and forced to live that has made her like this.
"Hi," I smiled her way and barely said goodbye to Alex as I headed to the biology classroom with Maria, she had Susan on her hip and Susan has one hand clutching Maria's shirt while the other was stuck in her mouth. She was getting so big.
Maria looked at Frances Eleanor and asked curiously, "Why's she here? I mean not-not to see particularly upset about it-it it just she has never been here before so I got curious about it and well..." She trailed off as her voice got smaller.
I smiled in a way I hoped was reassuring, "Her babysitter couldn't make it so I didn't really have a choice." I told her as we sat down in the biology room and put our respective babies on our laps.
"Oh," Maria gave Susan a teething ring when she began to fuss, "I hope whatever stopped her gets better soon," I mumbled an agreement and watched Frances Eleanor wiggle before turning and trying to pat Susan's head which prompted Susan to lick her making Frances Eleanor squeak. Maria and I both laughed and she said a quiet, "I hope they become friends when they're older."
"I do too," I admitted and watched them interact throughout the class period. Maria and I maintained small talk while our daughters tried to play.
When class ended I hurried to try and catch Alex before he went to his next class to give him a good luck kiss. I don't know why I wanted to do that, I just did. I found him and kissed him gently but before he could respond in any way I heard a voice, "The fags adopted a brat."
Immediately I turned around and I'll admit it, I was shocked. Charles Lee?! The last time I heard about him was the fucking milkshake incident which was almost three years ago now. Whatever, he wasn't going to get away with insulting my family like that, I shoved Frances Eleanor into Alex's hands and marched over despite Alex's protest, "Excuse me?" I grabbed his shirt collar, "I have actually killed somebody for that little girl so do you want to run that by me again?"
Now I'm not the most violent person, you can beat me all you want, but never the people I care about. "I'm just saying," Charles Lee shrugged and looked over again, "She's going to grow up not knowing where her mommy is. Or maybe it's that slut M-"
Could I have given him a chance to insult somebody else I cared for? Yes, I could've. Did I? Absolutely not. I punched him square in the nose and in retaliation he clocked the side of my face. I put my arms up in a T for defense after he managed to hit me again in the middle of the face. I punched him in the throat and dropped when he went to hit my face again, I jumped up, punching his chin, before somebody pulled me back, "Jack-Jack calm down!"
"Alex!" I wanted to go after this man more than I had and struggled lightly, "Let me go! He hasn't gotten everything he deserves yet!" Alex refused to budge and I barely noticed Laf holding Frances Eleanor in the corner of my eye as I noticed the man standing between Charles and me was none other than, "Aaron."
