I feel new to the world, like an animal becoming human. Nothing is quite the same as it was before I was imprisoned and kept captive. But I find myself happy with these new people, despite only knowing them for a day and a half. It's now night, we've decided to stay a day more in hopes that Arthur will be okay.
Laying on the bed, staring at the little sparkles on the ceiling glimmering in the little light that comes through the window. I'm left to think while everyone else sleeps nicely. Do I belong? I sigh aloud, then turning my body to face the rest of the room. Aaron, the sweet curlied haired boy rests next to me. He and I are far apart on the bed, with his snake, Blossom, dividing the two of us. I can sense that he's not in a deep sleep, but rather a light and slightly alert slumber. He must sleep like this often, he has blue-ish bags underneath his eyes.
After gently petting Blossom, I sit up to see the other bed. Lyra and Arthur are laying in a funny way. Arthur has his feet at his pillow and Lyra's legs overlap his butt and lowerback, their blankets are on the floor. I giggle to myself, and then sense another conscious mind in the room. Aw, shit. I glance at Aaron, seeing his eyes wide open, staring at me. "What was that?" He rubs one of his eyes and speaks in a gruffy, sleepy voice. I shush at him and tell him to go back to sleep, but instead he sits up, letting the comforter to slide off his bare skin, and looks out the window, then back at me. "Am I making you uncomfortable by sleeping in the same bed? I'm...I'm sorry..." His voice becomes light and sweet, I can hear sincerity in his voice. He really means every word he says.
"No, you're okay. Don't worry." I reply back, trying to reassure him. He looks down at his lap, seeing the white cloth dimmed by the night over his legs. Since I'm confused, I read his mind. Should I take her to the patch? I'm intrigued. Nah. She'll be weirded out if I take her out in the middle of the night. Right at that thought, I feel as if I must share my thoughts. Even though it is odd, I'm pretty bored right now and whatever patch he's talking about sounds fun. "Take me to the patch." I say in a monotone voice. I end up getting a wide eyed expression from Aaron.
"You," he gulps and looks down, "you read my mind, didn't you? Heh...I forgot you can do that." Aaron rubs the back of his neck, chuckling with slight discomfort. I sigh, realizing that not everyone is comfortable with someone listening to their thoughts. It's been so long since I've heard another's ideas straight from their head, I've forgotten some of the, basic, unspoken rules. "Sorry, I don't mean to intrude or anything." I attempt to remove the awkwardness from the moment, failing and adding to it.
The room goes quiet, I can only hear Arthur's light snores and voices coming from both Arthur and Lyra's dreams. There's also the faint sound of both Aaron and I's breathing. I go from looking down at my hands to jumping at the sudden sound of Aaron getting out of bed. I instantly put my head up to see Aaron making his way to the door, grabbing his white button up shirt and putting it on. I choose to hop off the bed, understanding what he is doing. "So, we're going?" I ask, right as Aaron slips on his worn down shoes.
He looks up at me and gives me a big, cheesy grin.
Yes, of course!
I return the smile before heading toward the door and putting on my new cloak.
"Be careful, Sony, there's rose bushes and thorny plants all around us." Aaron says, tiptoeing his way toward a visible clearing. We've been walking for at least half an hour now. Every step I take has either a crunch or squish to it. Aaron is right in front of me, sometimes lending his hand to me if he thinks I need assistance.
I notice the nickname he used, Sony, right as I trip over a tree trunk. My knees hit a pile of crunchy leaves, I take this very second to realize that I'm in an autumn-like area. Half a second later, Aaron comes to my aid. "Are you okay? Sony? You didn't hurt yourself too bad, did you?" He has his arm around me with his hand on one of my schoulder blades. I turn to him, then look at my surroundings. I see red, gold, and brown leaves in the trees with thorny bushes and vines along the path we're walking on. It looks like the fall rather than winter.
