We had walked right by her, not noticing the dirty clothes or the fact that she was shaking like a leaf. We were halfway down the sidewalk when I heard a thud behind us.
Now she lays on my mattress, in my hotel room, probably unnaware that she passed out three hours ago. "Aaron, we can't take care of another person. We don't even have enough food to last the next two weeks." I shake my head in return to Arthur's commentary. He's been scratching his head about this since I first ran to this girl's aid.
I look over to him, his white and maroon tipped mullet irritates me. It's always in his face and it just makes him look like a punk rock reject. "I know, but she's one of us and she looks like she just escaped one of the, um..." Discomfort fills the air as I'm suddenly reminded of when I was a prisoner to what felt like Hell. Yesterday was the official end of the scyra-human war, which probably won't be the last one.
"Guh....wha....?" My attention is suddenly brought back to the girl. She scans the room in a panic, "where am I? Who are you? What happened?" Dozens of questions spill out of her mouth, the more and more she looks around. I tend to her hand and attempt to calm her down. "It's okay, we're trying to help...you passed out and..."
"I PASSED OUT?!"
Arthur chuckles, standing in place while mocking me. "You're not helping a bit, dude."
"Would you stop laughing and help me? Use your emotion powers or whatever to calm her down."
Arthur groans, I groan back. He drags himself over to the panicking girl and places his hand on her shoulder. Almost instantly, she falls back and lays down again. Her breathing has significantly slowed as well.
"Who are you people?" She asks.
"We're just some travellers heading to a nearby city." Arthur replies as he walks across the room and pulls a chair to the bed. He grabs his white blanket, which isn't really white anymore because it's old and dirty. "We won't make it there with Mr. 'demands to take care of random girls that pass out on the street' though." He plops into the chair and relaxes his body, giving me the yeah I'm talking about you, buddy face. I roll my eyes and tend back to the girl. "My name is Aaron. This is Arthur," I gesture to the bathroom where I had left another one of my friends to watch my pet, "and my other friend, Lyra, is in the restroom."
Then, out of nowhere, the bathroom door swings open.
"AARON, YOUR SNAKE WON'T LISTEN TO ME!"
Out comes my small scaley friend. Her scales reflect the sun's light from the window as if it's a rainbow and any scale that isn't shimmering rainbow is a banana yellow color. She slithers her way to my foot and demands that I pick her up, so I pick her up. Another surprise comes up when the girl sits up and points to the snake, asking only one question.
"Is that Blossom?"
Silence fills the room, I glance over to Arthur, who's glaring at the girl. I turn to her and meet eyes with her. "How...how do you know her name?"
My snake, Blossom, wraps herself around my wrist. My other snake, Ollie, pokes his head out of my shirt pocket. I look down at him and looks back up at me. "What's wrong? You seem frightened, Aaron." I just shake my head, "Sssh, go back in my pocket." I poke his little snout and he curls up in the pouch. I look back up to see a confused look on the girl's face. That's right, I never told her. I can talk to animals.
"I, um, I can talk to animals. Just saying." My voice cracks, she nods slowly and thinks for a moment. "I can read minds and control people. I'm practicing on being a telepath too." I'm guessing I look terrified because as soon as she looks back at me, her face instantly looks regretful and scared. "Sorry, um, I mean, I don't know. Nevermind." She goes into a light panic again, I scoot in front of her, Blossom falls into my lap as I place my hands on the girl's shoulders. "What am I thinking right now?" I ask, she goes silent.
"You love cornsnakes." I nod and take a moment to shift my thoughts, as I do so, she laughs and looks over to Arthur. "You, sir, need to lighten the fuck up according to him." I let my head drop as I desperately try not to laugh. I can only just imagine Arthur's expression.
But instead of his usual whine of annoyance, he laughs. "Well I mean, at least I don't have to sleep with the lights on and fifty stuffed animals because I'm not scared of the dark. Unlike you." Lyra let's out a stomach hardening laughter from the bathroom and I can feel my face grow red. I lift my head up and pull my brunette curls behind my ear as I think of my next move. Seconds later, I launch myself at Arthur and tackle him.
"Fucker!" Arthur falls back into the chair and it tilts and crashes into the second bed in the room. Arthur flips me over him and onto the bed, which leads me to get a grip of his white and dark red locks. As soon as I hit the bed, he let's out a yelp. "My hair! Oh my god, Aaron, stop! FUCK!" I look down at him, my face above his. "Take it back, asshole." He shakes his head in response before headbutting me right in the nose. I fall back to feel my nose for blood, accidentally giving him a chance get up and pin me down.
Arthur holds me to the bed and I turn to the left side of the bed, seeing the girl awkwardly looking down. "Get off me," I sigh, "Arthur please get off me, I'm calm now." He grunts and reluctantly hops off of me. He leaves the room and goes into the restroom to hang out with Lyra.
I sit up and rub my wrist where Arthur had put his weight. "Does stuff like that happen often?" I meet eye to eye with the girl, noticing her hazelnut brown irises with green chunks here and there, and then look back down. "Well, um, it happens every once in a while."
It goes silent for a minute or two.
The girl makes an attempt to stand up, but when she takes a step forward, her legs give out. I immediately jump to my feet and allow her to fall into me. "Hey...hey....slow down there, heh." She pulls herself away from my chest and comes back to her feet while holding onto my arms for dear life. "I, um, thank you." She lets go of me and stands on her own. Another fifteen seconds of silence go by and I feel the urge to ask for her name. Before I can ask, she answers. "My name is Sonya." I let a grin form on my face at the sound of her name. Sonya.
"That's a beautiful name, Sonya."
"Your name isn't too bad either, Aaron." She pokes at my chest and laughs. "Maybe we can be buddies. What do you say?"
My smile grows wider.
"I wouldn't mind it."
