Eleanor's POV
I walk beside Allison, listening to her chat away happily, it's twenty to nine and we arranged to meet after we swapped phone numbers yesterday after work, now we're on our way to grab a quick breakfast at a coffee shop before going to work. The queue is surprisingly short this morning so we order and pay quickly before picking a table to sit at, 'Allison, I've been meaning to ask you something' I say to her, sipping my caramel latte, she nods for me to go on, 'Do you know about a guy who lives here, he's around our age and has brown hair that hangs down into his eyes and brown eyes, he wears round glasses?' I ask, suddenly realising that there might be quite a few people who fit that description here.
'You mean the creepy guy that stalks people?' she asks, taking a bite of her croissant.
I raise an eyebrow 'stalks people?'
'Oh yes' she shrugs a shoulder 'He's well known in this town for being creepy, he stalks everyone on a regular basis, at first people often reported him to the police but even the police couldn't stop his stalking habit and they kind of gave up trying after they deemed him to be harmless, they said that it's probably just a habit that he had and that he has never shown any signs of wanting harm anyone that he stalks, that was a long time ago and people are used to him often following them now'
'That's a little bit creepy' I frown, taking another large sip of my hot beverage.
'You'll probably see a lot of him seeing as you're new here, I don't know why he follows people, no one does but you'll soon learn to ignore him, most people barely even notice him now' she explains, finishing off her croissant.
'What's his name?' I ask
She frowns a little, pausing to think 'I think his name is Oliver, Oliver Stevens I think the police said'
'He stalks everyone in this town?' I ask, 'that's a lot of people'
'He has stalked everyone, but there are people that he stalks more than others, there are people that he's more interested in' she tells me.
'Girls?' I ask
'Not necessarily' she shakes her head 'I don't think he's stalking to be a pervert or anything, he's just a bit strange, he likes to stalk Mr Andrews, but he's also scared of him as Mr Andrews has confronted him about it rather aggressively a couple of times, the boss is a private man and doesn't like to be followed' Allison says. I nod slowly in understanding and we finish our coffees in silence.
By five to nine we're already rushing towards our workplace, we step into the elevator together, waiting patiently as it reaches the top floor. It dings as the doors open and we step outside, Allison sits at her desk and I wave goodbye to her as I go into my office. I get comfortable in my chair before reading over Mr Andrews' schedule for today, is he in yet? Or does he come later? It says here that he has a meeting at half past nine with a client.
I open up my emails to find a list of things that he wants me to complete today, apparently he's going to send me a list everyday. Picking up the phone on my desk, I decide to make a few calls to the clients first, once that is out of the way the rest if rather straightforward.
---
A knock sounds on my door before Allison pops her head round, I look up at her, 'Boss' nine thirty client is here, I've just sent him in' she informs me, closing the door again and leaving. I grab my notebook and pen and stand up, hurrying out of the door, I knock on Mr Andrews' door.
'Come in'
I slip inside quietly, closing the door behind me and walk over to the two men, I smile politely at the man, sitting down in the chair opposite him as Mr Andrews leans back comfortably in his office chair. I begin scribbling down notes as the two of them talk, actually it was mostly the client doing the talking, Mr Andrews would occasionally reply with short answers or with some rather straightforward questions which made his client visibly uncomfortable, but of course I did not say anything.
A knock sounded at the door almost halfway through the meeting and Mr Andrews calls for the person to come in, a few seconds later Allison walks in, balancing a tray in her hands as she closes the door behind her, she walks over and sets down three mugs of coffee in front of us, I smile at her and she grins back at me before turning to leave.
I take this short break as a chance to massage my aching wrist, I've been writing quite fast for about twenty minutes. Mr Andrews and his client drink from their coffee at the same time, I glance up at Mr Andrews, he is wearing a black suit with a white button down shirt underneath, the top two buttons are undone. His hair is styled in the same way as yesterday, but as I stare at him I begin to notice that he looks slightly different from yesterday.
My eyes squint a little as I stare at him harder, he doesn't appear to have had a haircut, his strong jawline is clean shaven just like yesterday, his slightly crooked nose is still the same. Is it just my imagination? No, I'm sure there is something different about him, as I look at his eyes it suddenly clicks, his eyes look different. I don't know why, they are of course the same blue as they were yesterday but they just look slightly different from yesterday.
I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something in his eyes that's different from yesterday. I snap out of it as soon as he makes eye contact with me and I begin to feel a blush spread on my cheeks at the fact that I've been caught staring at him so intently. I pick up my pen and instantly put my head down, looking back down at the notes I had made and soon the meeting resumes.
---
'Good bye Mr Andrews, enjoy the rest of your morning' the client stands up, leaning over the desk to shake Mr Andrews' hand as doesn't move from his office chair, the client shakes my hand too before seeing himself out. I lick my lips as silence falls upon the room before I stand up, turning to leave.
'Why were you staring at me?' his voice suddenly sounds, I pause on my way to the door.
'Huh?' I turn back to face him, he frowns and I know that I have said the wrong thing 'Pardon?' I correct myself.
'Earlier in the meeting, why were you staring at me?' he asks, my mouth forms an 'o' in realisation.
'I um' I hesitate but as I look into his eyes, my previous thoughts come back to me 'You look different from yesterday' I blurt out.
He slowly raises an eyebrow 'How do I look different from yesterday?'
'I don't know, there's something about the look in your eyes that just looks different from yesterday' I shrugs a little, hugging my notebook to my chest.
His eye brows raise in surprise as he stares at me 'My eyes?' I nod, a smirk tugs at the corner of his lip 'How interesting of you to say that'
My eyebrows pull together in confusion, what is he talking about? The silence between us soon becomes award and I decide to leave quickly, going back to my own office to write up the notes that I made in the meeting. Half way through writing up my notes I notice movement to my left, I look over to see the blinds that separate my office form my boss' office are opening, they open and are suddenly pulled to one side, similar to how a curtain is pulled until I can't see straight through Mr Andrews' office and out the other glass wall that holds the view of the town.
I sit up straighter as I become confused, Mr Andrews stares at me before turning around and walking back to desk, sitting down and picking up a piece of paper to read. I frown as I look away and back to my own work, why did he open the blind? Didn't Allison say that he never opens that?
I turn back to the work that I was doing, deciding to just ignore him. But my instincts begin to take over and I suddenly begin to feel that this town is hiding a big secret, everyone in this town if hiding something and it makes me want to investigate and find out what's really happening. Everyone seems suspicious, and what's all this about people becoming crazy? Surely something is making them crazy... or someone.
