Eleanor's POV
It was not as busy today at work, only a couple of early morning meetings but the work load was not as heavy as it usually is, perhaps a lot of people had taken a holiday, I wasn't about to complain though, I even had time to procrastinate in my office today.
A knock sounded on my door before it opened, Allison's head peeked through the door, 'Eleanor, I just received a call from the reception downstairs, there are police officers who wish to speak with you immediately'
My heart dropped. It must be from my visit to the hospital, I hope they don't suspect me, what if they arrest me? I chewed nervously on my bottom lip as I stood up, the separation between my office and James' office was closed so he couldn't see me, I guess he had something important to do and didn't want any distractions. I smoothed out my trousers and re-tucked my shirt as I followed Allison out to the hallway, she returned to her desk but I could feel her burning gaze in the back of my head as I waited somewhat impatiently for the elevator to arrive.
Once I reached the ground floor I walked slowly towards the main reception area at the entrance, there was a large waiting room and I could see two police officers sat beside each other chatting. I took a deep breath to relax before making my way over to them, a small forced smile on my face, 'Good afternoon, how can I help you?' I say as I approach them.
They both look up at me slightly startled before standing and shaking my hand, 'Good afternoon, you must be Eleanor Bradley?'
'Yes that's me' I nod.
'Is there anywhere we can go to have a quick chat? We just want to ask you a few questions' one of them says, glancing around the elegant reception area. I nod before walking towards the elevator, on the first floor there are meeting rooms that you can walk into without a booking and they're not usually very busy, they're made for clients who drop in unannounced and demand to be seen or for staff interviews.
As the elevator doors open on the first floor I lead them into one of the empty meeting rooms, closing the door behind us as the take a seat around the table, 'would you like anything to drink? Water? Coffee?' I ask, they both decline. One of the officers pulls out a small notepad and a pen... here we go.
I take another deep breath as I sit down opposite them, 'We just wanted to ask a few questions, I am sure you may have heard in the news that there has been a murder a few nights ago at the local asylum hospital that's rather notorious in this town'
'Yes, I have heard there has been numerous murders happening there for a few years now' I nod. Despite the officers being in my workplace, requesting my permission to ask me questions that I'm not necessarily obligated to answer, in an environment that I'm familiar with... I still feel as if they're the ones in charge of this meeting, as though I'm being held in a police station for questioning. I need to relax.
'That's right, it has been a very difficult case and will remain open and being investigated for as long as the murders go on and even after they stop' he explains, I nod, 'The reason we are here today is because after the most recent murder we reviewed the CCTV of the hospital for that entire night, and we saw that you were the last person to visit the hospital before the murder happened?'
'Really?' I ask, somewhat surprised, the officer nods, 'I know that I went to the hospital rather late at night but when I saw the news report the murder had occurred quite a few hours after I had left'
'That's correct, after you left, the receptionist left about an hour and a half after you and no one had been in the hospital since your and the receptionist's departure until a few hours later when the murder occurred.' the officer explains as the other officer remains silent, the only sound coming from the second police officer was the scribbling of her pen against the notepad. 'Can you tell us why you went to the hospital?'
