It had already been two days.
I was fine, I was quite used to working labor with practically no food and even less water. But it was obviously affecting Yona and Lili. Especially Lili.
The soldier had not been lying. This was a fort for defense, but also offence. Every day, more slaves and weapons arrived. These people where literally living off the Nadai, which made them oblivious of the pain and unable to leave. Those whose bodies finally couldn't take anymore Nadai where taken away, disappearing. No one knows what happens to them.
"What's wrong?" I heard a guard call and glanced over to find a guard pulling on Lili's hair. I gritted my teeth.
"Are you thirsty? Your getting slower" The soldier chuckled, holding her in a head lock.
"You haven't had a drop of wine yet" he continued.
"I'm... Fine..." Lili croaked, struggling against him. I clenched my fists, watching them.
"This is free for all of you. Drink as much as you want" he said, dropping it all over her face.
Lili! Pull through!
"Lili!" Yona gasped, going to run forward.
"Hay, get back to work!" A soldier called. I gasped at the scene before me. Lili spat it out, rubbing the liquid off from around her mouth with the back of her sleeve.
"Thanks, I was just about to wash my face. I feel much more refreshed, thanks to you" She said, turning to her work again.
"Lili" Yona gasped as we both jogged up to her side.
"I'm fine... Fine... Yona... I... Feel uncontrollably angry right now. A place like this... Steps on people's self respect. It's such a horrible place. I will not tolerate it. Even the heavens will not tolerate it" She scowled. Yona blinked, stunned as a smile stretched across my face.
"But... The thing that angers me most, I just... Really, really want some water. Anything is fine, even just a little. It's that me who wants to shamelessly grab some wine and drink all I want!" Lili cried, beginning to cry.
"I always thought that even if I died of thirst, I would not give in. But the cold touch of water... Instantly broke down my resolve..." Lili continued.
"I'm scared... I'm so scared..." She sobbed as Yona walked up, cupping her cheeks.
"Lili, you are not shameful at all. You didn't do anything wrong" Yona said. Lili gaped at her as I pulled her into a hug.
"Your are extremely strong, I'm proud of you Lili" I whispered as I moved away, going back to my work.
~Time skip~
I heard shuffling outside, and instantly noticed that the two women where gone. I cursed under my breath, standing up. My throat burned, I wouldn't last much longer... Those poor girls... I stepped outside, to find Lili with a sword at her throat. Before I could even blink, I found Yona swinging a plank of wood at his head.
"I'll kill you!" He roared, swinging at Yona. I stepped in front of her, unsheathing one of my daggers. I caught his sword.
"Yona, get Lili" I croaked. Yona nodded, hurrying to Lili's side. When the soldier tried to hit her, I caught his blow, un-arming him in a second. Lili then appeared behind him, stabbing a rock into the back of his neck.
"Lili!" Yona gasped, running to her side as Lili sunk onto her knees. I scanned the grounds around us.
"Lili, are you okay?" Yona asked, kneeling beside her.
