My alarm clock started buzzing at 7 AM. I groaned and rolled over in attempt to find the snooze button. I showered and got ready for school. The first day of senior year. I had less than a full year left and I was out of highschool. I got into my car and went to pick up my best friend Addley. We had been car pooling to school every day since preschool and that didn't change when we got our licenses and were able to drive on our own. She got into my car and gave me a look that mirrored how I felt. "I cannot believe that school is starting already! Didn't we just get out?" She groaned.
I laughed and backed out of her driveway. "I know. This year is going to last forever. Can it just be graduation now?" We both laughed at the thought. When we got to school, we met up with the guys. Our little group of friends consisted of Me, Addley, Luke, and Austin. We were best friends and it was alwyas nice to have two girls and to guys, so when things like prom rolled around, everyone had a date. "Hello handsomes." I greeted my friends.
"Hey, look at us. We're seniors!" Luke practically shouted in my face. We all laughed, he was way too excited for this.
"What are everyone's schedules?" Austin asked, unwadding the paper that held his schedule. We compared schedules to find that we only had one class all together, chemistry. I wasn't bad at chemistry, but I hated it. It was the most boring class to sit through. "I wonder what the new chem teacher is like." Until Austin had said that, I had completely forgotten that Mr. Martinez had retired."I hope it's a guy and I hope he's hot. We need a sexy teacher around here for once." Addley said, waving her hand around.
I laughed. "Me too. I think I would actually enjoy chemistry more if there was something nicer to look at than equtions." We all laughed while Luke and Austin rolled their eyes.
We didn't have anymore time to talk about it, because the bell rang, signalling the first day of our last year of high school. The day went off just like I thought it would. It was long and boring, but it was nice to see my friends again after the summer. When I got to chemistry, I met up with Addley and the guys and we all sat down in desks that formed a small square. "So, tell me more about this gorgeous guy that you met this summer." Addley smiled, poking me in the ribs.
"What? Our little Lily met a boy?" Luke's face held a lot of surprise. "So tell us about him, is he dreamy?" Luke asked, batting his eyelashes and looking up like he was in a far away world.
"Shut up you guys! His name is-" Before I could finish, we heard someone cleared their throat, probably the new teacher. I turned in my desk to face the front and my heart fell down to my stomach. "Jerod." I whispered so softly that no one else could hear me. Jerod's eyes met mine and the shock was clear between us. He quickly shook his head and went to his computer to take role.
"Alright class, I want to welcome everyone to chemistry. My name is Mr. Callahan and I am you're new chemistry teacher." My head spun and I couldn't think. This couldn't be right. Jerod couldn't be my chemistry teacher. Carissa had told me he was a senior in college. He still had a year to finish. I was so confused, I was just hoping this was some sort of terrible dream. I kept my mouth shut all the way through class, hoping he wouldn't call on me. Jerod must have been just as nervous as I was, because he avoided me like I had the plague. He didn't come near my desk or even look at me. At the end of class, I was ready to run like the wind out of that class when I heard his voice. "Um, Lily, is it? Can you wait a minute, please?" I turned to Addley and told her that I would meet her at my car. She nodded and followed the guys out the door. As soon as the classroom door closed and the last student was gone, I turned to him. "What the hell?" He whisper yelled at me.
"What the hell me? What the hell you! Carissa told me you were a senior in college. Seniors don't teach!" I wasn't afraid to yell.
"No, I just graduated. I had just finished my senior year when we met. And I thought you were 18." His voice got a little louder.
I gave him a confused look. "I am 18. I turned 18 like a week before we met! You knew how old I was." He could not be mad at me for this.
Jerod's face softened a little and his voice wasn't as angry. "I thought you had graduated. I figured since your sister set us up, that you were out of highschool." He looked at me helplessly.
"Well Jerod, what do you proprose we do?" I was silently pleading that he wouldn't say what he said.
"I think we need to break up. Trust me Lily, I really really really don't want to, but I can get fired and you can get in big trouble for this. Plus, it's illegal, I can go to prison."
I smiled and rolled my eyes. "Jerod, it would only be illegal if I was under 18 and we were sleeping together. Since niether of those things are happening, I don't think you will be going to prison anytime soon. But I don't want to break up." I looked down, trying not cry.
"Lily I don't want to break up either. But our relationship is wrong. We could both be in huge trouble." He looked at me, conflict clear in his eyes.
"Well then we won't tell anyone. We can keep our relationship a secret. I won't tell anyone, not even Carissa. Let's at least try to make it work." I begged him with my eyes. "I don't want to lose you." I mumbled, looking down at the floor.
He strode over to me and raised my chin so I was looking at him. "I don't want to lose you either. We'll figure something out ok? Let's meet at Carissa and Scott's apartment tonight and the four of us will talk about it. If this is going to work, we need to let them in on it." I nodded as a little bit of relief washed over me. At least for right now, he wasn't breaking up with me. He kissed my forehead and let me leave so my friends wouldn't get suspicious.
I distractedly drove Addley home. I was dating a teacher. Me. This was the last situation I expected to be in. I was expecting to hang out with Jerod tonight. Instead, I did get to hang out with Jerod, except I was going to be with my sister and her boyfriend and we were going to be discussing how to keep our relationship a secret and whether or not there should even be a relationship. I couldn't help but think how messed up my life was at this moment in time.
