"It's like you escaped from a Hallmark card or something."
-Robert to Giselle, Enchanted.
"You just had to have this brilliant idea now, huh Danny?" Ellie asked him as she walked down the isle to the baked goods section. He followed closely behind her, pushing the shopping cart as if his life depended on it.
"Of course I did. Who doesn't love to bake cookies?" he asked Ellie as he hopped on to the cart and pushed himself forward with it.
"Well... that depends. If it's 10 pm, no one. Especially when we don't have all the ingredients." she told him as she picked up a bottle of vanilla extract and placed it in the cart, and then moved on to look for the baking powder.
"Oh, it's not that late. Besides, it's Saturday, and mom and dad won't expect us to be home until midnight." he said to her.
"Danny" she told him " I had to drive us down here at 10 pm, and you're telling me it's not late?"
"Get over it." he said as he reached for something that was stacked on a shelf. "Let's get some icing!". He said.
"You don't put icing on cookies."
"You can if you want to."
"I don't want to."
After stacking the shopping cart with all the necessary ingredients, and Danny finally convincing her to get the icing, they headed towards the cash register.
"You know what, you go ahead and pay. Go find me when you're done." Ellie said as she handed him a couple of crumpled dollars, and leaving him with the cart.
"Oh, c'mon Ellie!" he shouted, but she just smiled to herself and exited the store.
It was the beginning of November right now, and the nights had always chilled Ellie a bit, and since Danny had rushed her to get to the car and drive down here to Wal-Mart, she hadn't even thought about bringing a hoodie.
So she picked up her pace and raced to her car, trying to avoid the cold as much as she could. She opened the driver's side, stepped in, and started the engine, One Republic blaring from the stereo.
She sang along for a while, until she saw Danny carrying grocery bags in the distance. Deciding to be a good sister, she put the car in first and drove over to meet him.
"Thanks." he said as he loaded the bags in the back seat, and then hopped in the passenger's next to her.
"Sure, you owe me big time, though." she told him before she sped off.
"Can you believe this is your last year of high school?" Ellie asked Danny as she cracked the last egg into the mix, and got ready to beat it with the mixer.
"Ugh, don't remind me." he answered. She turned around and glanced at him to check and see if he was doing what she had instructed him to do: sift the flour and baking powder together. He was.
"Why? Sam and you are staying here, it's not like you're gonna study in some other place. It'll only be as if you were changing schools, that's all."
