“They say that the best blaze brightest when circumstances are at their worst.”

-Sophie Hatter, Howl’s Moving Castle.

Ellie had constantly expressed to herself –and to others- her excitement for the nearing of the play.

But now, as the date approached, she realized how incredibly nervous she was.

That always happened to her, so she really didn’t worry much.

But really, in just a few weeks it was opening night, and she was going to start hyperventilating.

Not even the fact that she had exams coming up soon worried her as much.

On Monday morning, she walked through the busy halls, the sound of chatter didn’t quite register in her brain.

She was lost in her own thoughts, and those thoughts mainly revolved around the play.

She couldn’t wait, but at the same time she could.

That was just it with Ellie, she was constantly in inner turmoil with herself.

She hadn’t even realized that Lionel had been following closely behind her and calling her name about three times.

McGillicuddy!” it finally registered in her brain, causing her to jump a bit and stop in the hallways.

Someone bumped in to her, but she was too confused by everything to care.

“Are you alright?” Lionel asked her as he approached her and looked at her in the eye.

Ellie looked back at him, and for some reason thought he looked really good today.

She just had this strong urge to bring her hand up to his hair and touch it because it looked really soft…

“McGillicuddy!” Lionel had to shout again for Ellie to focus.

“What!” she shouted back in confusion.

Today, she was really out of it because of all the things bombarding in her brain.

“I called you like a thousand times and you didn’t answer. Are you okay?” he asked her.

At this, she closed her eyes and shook her head slightly, as if it would help her clear her head.

“Yeah. Sorry, I’m just a bit distracted today. What’s up?” she asked him. She contemplated to start walking again, but decided that she wasn’t going to be able to walk and pay attention to him at the same time.

“I hate exams.” he said nonchalantly as he stuck his hands in his pockets.

“Tell me about it…” Ellie agreed.

“I mean, I passed math last time… but I don’t know about this one.” He said with a smile.

Ellie smiled back, and then they both began to laugh.

“So anyway,” he began, clear that he was going to change the subject, “I…”

He brought his hand up to his head and ruffled his hands through it, something Ellie had been wanting to do since he shouted at her earlier.
