"Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step."
-Rafiki, The Lion King.
"-so, if I make my mind up and decide to stay for one more hour after school finishes on Mondays and Wednesdays, I can take both theatre and art." Ellie heard Celia say as she absentmindedly sipped her chocolate milkshake and stared out through the window.
They were sitting in their favorite booth at their favorite hangout, a small café adequately named 'A Page in the Sun' -because it was probably the only place that had more variety of books than the local library itself- three blocks away from Celia's house. Ellie couldn't stop thinking about the math homework she had to do when she got home, and she was considering asking Celia to let her copy it.
"Oh, but I promise I'll take it next year with you again." Celia's words barely registered in Ellie's head.
Now she was admiring the nice dog that was being walked by Celia's neighbor Mr. Smith, and right then and there Ellie decided she wanted a dog.
"Ellie?" she heard.
"Hm?" she responded.
"Ellieeee?" she heard again.
"Okay." she responded again as she slurped her milkshake.
She heard Celia sigh loudly, and only then she realized she'd been talking to her.
"Never mind, it doesn't matter anymore." Celia said as she picked up another fry and popped it in her mouth.
It wasn't until Ellie turned her gaze away from the window that she noticed Ed walking straight towards their table.
Ah Ed, probably the only guy Ellie didn't find downright annoying and arrogant. Well, okay that was a lie. There were a lot of guys who Ellie found quite nice, but Ed was her only male best friend.
Well, okay that was a lie, too. Jack was pretty close to a male best friend as well, but she'd only known him for 3 years when he transferred in the 9th grade. Besides, Ellie and Jack had had some sort of weird on-again off-again relationship for about a year, and then they decided that everything was way less complicated if they just stayed friends. Not that their feelings for each other didn't return once or twice, they did, but that was back then, and this was now.
And she'd known Ed since elementary, which was way longer than Jack, anyway.
So in conclusion, she counted Ed as her first male best friend (She still really cared about Jack, though.)
"Ladies" he said as he took a seat in the booth next to Ellie, both of the girls turning to look at him and giving him quick smiles before returning to their food.
"Chicks prefer food over me. Brilliant." he said dramatically, earning a giggle from Ellie.
That was when she realized his black hair was parted the other way, when he usually had it to the right. She considered making a small joke about this, but she wasn't sure how he'd take it, so she just stayed quiet.
"Hey Ed, did you finish the math homework?" Celia suddenly asked him.
Damn it, just when Ellie was about to ask her for it.
