"You have disturbed the dirt!"
-Mole, Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
Ellie wasn't quite sure why she didn't really tolerate being at home that evening.
Maybe it was because it was a really rainy day and all she wanted to do was go outside and shout at the top of her lungs that she was 'singing in the rain!' (Something that she couldn't do because her mom completely prohibited it ever since her brother got that terrible cold back when he was like 14 for staying out in the rain for hours) or maybe it was because she could hear Danny and Sam's loud shouts all the way across the hall and into her room. Danny's PlayStation3 was his baby, and right now, Grand Theft Auto 5 was all the rage, even though he didn't own it just yet.
Sometimes she thought that that was the only reason Danny hung out with Celia's brother: because Sam obtained the games way before Danny did.
But then she reminded herself that Danny and Sam were exactly the same as her and Celia. Either way, she slipped on her rain boots and trekked over to Celia's house -much to her mother's protest- which was practically two blocks away.
"Tell your mom thank you for the chilaquiles, Ellie. They were absolutely magnificent." Lisa, Celia's mom told her when she opened the door for her.
Celia's mom was probably the only person Ellie felt comfortable calling by her first name. Ellie remembered how she always used to give her the biggest slices of cake at Celia's birthday parties, because she knew Ellie was her daughter's best friend. That was probably the thing that made Ellie like Lisa the most.
It was clear Celia took after her mom. They both had the dark straight hair and caramel eyes. Lisa on the other hand, was taller than her daughter -unlike Ellie and her mother.
"I will. I just wish she'd made them spicier, they're better that way." Celia told her as she removed her wet boots before stepping into the living room behind Lisa.
"Hey, c'mere. I made some hot chocolate." she told Ellie, disappearing into the kitchen.
As she walked past the living room and into the kitchen, Ellie couldn't help but notice all the paintings that adorned the walls.
The reason behind Celia's love of art: her mom.
Her mom painted better than any person Ellie had ever seen before. Of course, that wasn't very much, since art wasn't Ellie's strongest suit. But really, Lisa painted hella good, another thing Celia got from her.
Ellie instantly felt a pang of guilt, since she remembered last week when Celia had mentioned she would prefer to take art this year. But it quickly faded, since Ellie had promised her they'd take it next year. And she never broke a promise. Ever.
She smiled, thinking about Rapunzel in Tangled.
"So I hear you dragged Celia with you into this year's play?" Lisa asked, reaching for two mugs in the cupboard. Ellie took a seat on one of the island's stools, placing her elbow on the countertop and her chin on her hand.
"Yep. It's gonna be a lot of fun. She'll like it."
"She says she wants to be a stagehand."
"She's lying."
