Jay woke up immediately. He was breathing heavily and again it was still dark outside. He started thinking. What was this dream? Who was this woman? What is WICKED and why she said it's good? So many questions started floating thought his mind, when he heard his name to be called
"Jay?"He turned to see Nya, rubbing her eyes, then looked at him
"Yes Nya?"Jay asked
"Why are you up?"Nya asked
"I had a dream"Jay said thinking if it was a dream....or was it a memory? He was so confused right now
"You wanna talk about it?"Nya whispered, since she didn't wanted to wake up someone. Jay started thinking. Should he tell her?
"No..."Jay said"I prefer not to talk about it"he added
"Okay, but if something's bothering you, you can tell me, you know"Nya said, trying to comfort him
"Yeah, thanks Nya"Jay said smiling. Nya flashed him a smile, then started putting on her shoes
"You wanna go for a run? It will be sunrise anyway and I don't fell like sleeping anymore"she said
"Yeah, I would love that"Jay said. He put on his shoes too and they walked out of the Homestead quietly, not to wake up the others. They walked to the fields and just started walking
"Hey, you wanna race?"Nya asked
"Sure, why not?"Jay asked and the two stand in position
"Okay, one, two, three!"Nya yelled and the two started sprinting around the glade. Jay was keeping up with Nya the whole time, even sometimes can he before her. When they arrived in front of the doors, the two stopped
"Well, you sure will make a good runner. The others weren't lying"Nya said giggling
"So, you say that I will hava a chance to be one?"Jay asked with hope
"Maybe yes, maybe not..."Nya said"I am not the one who says what you are gonna be, but you have high chances"she said
"Well, let's hope I do"Jay said chuckling
"Yeah, it will be nice to run together in the Maze"Nya said
"Yeah..."Jay said smiling at the thought. The whole day, alone with Nya in the Maze"It will"Jay said and looked at her. He realized that it wasn't dark anymore. Nya saw it too
"It's still very early. Do you wanna go to the little Garten which I showed you?"Nya asked
"C'mon. Let's race to there"Jay said and started running. Nya laughed and followed
Later that day, Nya and Seliel left to get ready together, while he noticed Cole and Kai sitting on the doors, waiting for them to open. Jay was confused why Kai was going to the Maze. He wasn't a runner, was he? He walked over to Lloyd, since he was supposed to learn where he is working today. Jay found him with Harumi and Skylor, talking about something, then turned and saw Jay walking to him
"Hey Jay. Came for work?"Lloyd asked
"Yeah, and to ask something"Jay said
"And what this thing might be?"Lloyd asked
"Why is Kai going to the Maze? He isn't a runner, right?"Jay asked and Lloyd shook his head
"No, he is not"Lloyd said"He is going with Cole to follow Turner's tracks, to see if he made it"Lloyd said
"Ohhh..."Jay said, quiet confused with what he was supposed to respond on this
"Anyway, you are working in the Med-Jack hut with Skylor and Harumi"Lloyd said
"Okay. See ya later"Jay said waving and walking away
The afternoon, Jay greeted Nya and Seliel, then the two ran to the map room to do their mapping for today. On other hand, Cole and Kai still didn't come back and the doors were going to close soon. Now, he, Lloyd and the other Gladers, except Nya and Seliel, who were still in the map room. Jay was standing with Lloyd in front of everyone, waiting for Cole and Kai
"What of they don't make it?"Jay asked looking at Lloyd
"They will make it"Lloyd said, rubbing his chin
"But...what if they don't?"Jay asked, then there was long pause
"They will make it"Lloyd finally said. Suddenly, everyone heard the doors to close and backed a little
"Look!"someone yelled. Everyone turned towards the Maze, to see Cole, who was dragging Kai's unconscious form
"They are not gonna make it"Lloyd said. The doors were getting closer to one another
"Guys! Did Kai and Cole came back?"someone yelled, making his way to Jay and Lloyd. It was Seliel and Nya. Seliel saw the doors closing and Cole and Kai trapped inside
"COLE!"Seliel yelled and tried to run in, but Nya and Lloyd held her back
"NO SELIEL!"Nya yelled. Seliel was crying at this point. Nya was ready to cry too. Cole was her best friend and Kai was like a brother to her. The doors were so close to each other. Cole couldn't take it anymore and dropped Kai on the ground, then fell himself to take a breath. Jay couldn't believe what he was seeing. He did the first thing that came into his mind
He ran into the Maze
"JAY NO!"everyone started yelling to him, especially Nya. He was going thought the small gap left and just before the doors closed, he entered, leaving Nya staring at him with shock. Seliel and Skylor were both crying and Nya was going to start too. She fell on her knees and started
