song of the chapter: distant shouts by little children
"Ross!"
Ross blinked again, looking around at his surrounding. He could see a pink haired girl, calling his name. Was she the one singing the melody?
He blinks. His hand was raised. He was no longer staring at his sketchbook.
He stared at a open wound, dripping blood all over his clothes.
He suddenly screamed, sitting up and yelping, groaning at the suddenly pain all over his body.
"Ross! Ross! Lay back down! Its okay!"he was back on the dirt, shocked.
"What.. what.. just.. I..." he shivered. "We had to inject you with some drug. It initiated your hallucinations in no time." she stated. "It was a drug to help stop you from screaming as we healed your wounds." he took some time to wrap his head around what had just happened to him.
He stared at his hand, his fingertips numb. It was now fully bandaged. How? Oh yeah.. his brain felt slow. He was processing the environment around him. He was in a van now, laying down in the back, where the open space was. He lays on a pile of blankets, his eyes trying to find the right place to focus and his mind trying to find the right way to think. Who was he, where was he, why is he here... who are the people around him... But he knew all the answers to those questions. His goal... Why he was here...
"Laura.. why..." she cut him off as he made a soft groaning noise. "The medicine is still working its way into your system." a different voice said. It was female, but a little more raspier. Sounded a bit tired... worn out. Sick, but vengeful and determined. He shut his eyes. I'm tired.
"Jack, you really beat the shit out of him." Laura let out a breath. Ross opened his eyes quickly to the name. Jack.
He began to breath heavily, hyperventilating. "Ross.? Ross! Ross calm down its okay nothing is happening!" Laura tried to calm him down. A few moments later, he eventually shut his eyes again, resting for a moment.
"Fuck.." she breathed out letting out a little laugh of pain and shock. "I'm an idiot.." she sighed as she leaned against the side of the van frames. "I should have known something was up.. I should have at least made sure you were asleep.. or at least.. told you something... that I wasn't endanger." They sat there in a moment of silence, only accompanied by the noises from the car bumps and movement.
"God I'm such a fuck up." she face-palms herself, hitting herself a couple of times. "Everyone I love always leaves me somehow." Ross could only stare at her.
"I'm so.. useless-"
"I guess i'm the mislayed one here." he spoke in a croak, confusing her. She gave him a puzzled look. "What...?" He sat up, wincing a bit but it was bearable enough as he lays against the van sides.
"I don't belong here. I'm not meant to be here. With you. Anywhere. We shouldn't have met." he said.
"What are you saying all of the sudden!??!" Laura was taken back at the sudden words he spoke. He never said anything like this out of the blue. That's not Ross.
"You think your the fuck up... if all of this is is just making you think your the problem, then maybe I just shouldn't be in your life. Better yet, I shouldn't even exist." he whispered.
"
"Gosh..sTOP talking like that!!!" Laura bellowed, "I've told millions of times Ross how much I care about you, about us! THIS is special! Nothing can ever change that!!!" she gritted her teeth as she held back her tears. Why could he understand that he mattered? They mattered?
"Any hardship, any doubt you have can go to shit cause you know that I'm right here to push away everything and anything that's keeping you down. That's what I'm here for!" she cried out, "It was my career job at one point for christ sake Ross!"
"So don't tell me I'd be better of without you, because the truth is I would just be more scared!" she ends off her sentence as Ross stared at her in awe. They stared each other off with an intensity of emotions. Everything he felt for her on the very first day he realized he felt something, was suddenly blooming again inside of him.
Jack chimes in, "Sorry interrupt your little...uhh.... I don't know what to call it but we have an issue." she breaks eye contact from Ross, bending over a bit as she walked over to the front of the van, avoiding to hit her head. "Yes?"
"Police are on my ass." he said. Her eyes widened. "What!?!? Why!!?"
"Forgot to put back my license plate." he concluded. She groaned. "oH mY goSH! You fucking idiot! You gotta stop! Unless you wanna be in bigger trouble!" she insisted. He rolled his eyes at her ignorance. "Laura.. sweetie. "Are you forgetting that your god damn mother is a fucking runaway prisoner? We cant stop."
"We'll just hide her. Behind the junk you have. Why would they need to check the van anyway?" she realizes. "You never know."
"Of course."
"Person in the white van. Halt. I repeat, halt." Jack finally halted as Laura hid Carrie under covers and some card board. She looked like a pile of junk. Perfect.
"Lookie here. An ole rookie. Whats youngins like you doing out on a fine morning like this?" the officer approached Jacks window, as he rolls it down for him. "Good morning to you too officer. Nothing much, just going for a nice stroll in the morning. Off camping actually. Nothing too fancy. Not fancy at all actually."
The officer laughed. "I see, I see. See, I was actually ringin' these here sirens right behind ya, loud and clear good sir. Didn't ya hear?" he asks, a little sarcastic and annoyed. Jack remains calm.
"Didn't know they we're for me. Thought they we're in the distance officer."
"They we're right behind you. How?"
"I just had ear surgery see? Still recovering... ears clogged every now and then so everything sometimes sounds like its in the distance..." Jack lied again. "Yet you're going campin'? With this young lady here?" he referred to Laura who currently had her black hood on and shades on, covering her identity.
"Yes. Nature. Relieving some of the stress sir. Good way to get things out of our system you know? Fresh morning." Officer crossed his arms.
"Well see here. Reason I stopped you here lad was because of the back yer' car. It don't have no license. That's in tolerable."
"Really? Dang... It musta' fell off while I was driving... this babe here is an old gal." Jack pat the vans sides. "Couldn't afford new one just yet. Not after my surgery.."
"Let me see your license." Jack pulled out his license, which appeared to be...
expired.
"It seems that your license has expired here friend."
"Really? When."
"Bout' a fuckin' year ago thats when. Boy, I don't like your sarcasm." the officer snapped.
"And I don't like your attitude, s i r."
"That's it, stay right where you are. Anything you do or say can and will be held against you. We're searching the vehicle." the officer says to the other police men, standing out in the road surrounded by trees.
