THEY SAY change is good; several doors open when one closes. But for the Mercy West Medical Center staff, change is terrifying.
"Are you ready for tomorrow?" Jackson Avery questions, taking a bite of his turkey sandwich. He sits in the hospital cafeteria with four of his fellow surgical residents. The group normally wouldn't eat lunch at work, but today was a special day. It was their last day at the medium-sized hospital.
"Those Seattle Grace goons won't know what hit them," Charles Percy laughs, tossing a grape into the air and catching it in his mouth.
Reed Adamson laughs, pushing on the man's shoulder lightly. "Did you hear about the LVAD wire situation?"
"Didn't some doctors in our year kill a patient?" Dr. Percy questions. He looks around the table with wondering eyes.
"No, they were trying to get UNOS to move the guy up on the transplant list," April Kepner explains, her voice peppy, but low in volume.
The last of the group stays silent, deep in thought. She sits completely still, her blonde hair in a high ponytail and her blue eyes focused on the full container of salad on the table. She is deep in thought, fear of the following day radiating through her veins.
"Are you okay, Violetta?" April questions when she notices the silent girl.
Violetta Crane nods her head, moving her salad around with a plastic fork. "It's just that we have to start over, you know? It was hard enough getting on our attendings' good sides."
The table is quiet for a short amount of time before Reed speaks, "You could just drop your panties like you did for Chief Hudson. That seemed to solve all of your problems."
The entire cafeteria seems to fall silent with her words, and Violetta can feel several pairs of eyes on her just waiting to see her next move. Tears burn her eyes as she abruptly stands up from the table and leaves, forgetting her salad. The cafeteria is filled with gossiping whispers.
"That was out of line, Reed," Jackson spits, grabbing the deserted food and stacking it upon his trash.
"She just needs to get over it," the red head says, rolling her eyes. Jackson stands, tossing the stack of garbage into a trash can and following Violetta.
The first plain hallway outside of the cafeteria is long and empty. It is also silent, not considering the soft crying coming from a supply closet. Jackson Avery rushes to the door and enters the small room.
"Etta?" He questions, kneeling beside the girl and wrapping his arms around her. Violetta doesn't reply, and she buries her head into the shoulder of her fellow resident.
Jackson Avery and Violetta Crane have been friends since their first day at Mercy West. They worked together to diagnose a patent with a hefty brain tumor in a young child. They bonded over that time. Jackson and Violetta have conflicting personalities that seem to even one another out. Violetta is quiet and shy while Jackson is a goof-ball (and a bit of a suck up, but that is beside the point). They both come from a families with successful surgeons, though. Jackson Avery is the grandson of Harper Avery who is no doubt one of the most famous doctors around, and Violetta is the daughter of doctor Oliver Crane, a neurosurgeon from Chicago who took the surgical world by storm. Violetta barely knew her father, though. Cynthia Crane, Violeta's Mother, was very sick, and because she despised Chicago, she moved to southern Illinois. Cynthia and Oliver were no doubt in love, but Oliver was in love with surgery. He was not about to give that up.
Violetta didn't want to become a surgeon at first. She despised her father for leaving her to care for her sick mother, so it was only fair that she wanted nothing to do with doctors. But when it was time to go to college, the medical field was the only thing that seemed borderline interesting to the girl. Violetta was accepted into Harvard, and she soon fell in love with medicine.
"Etta, you can't let her bother you. She brings Hudson up every time you try to make a point. I know it hurts, but you can't let her know it bothers you," Jackson says, using his thumb to wipe the tears from Violeta's pale cheeks.
"It's just so hard," The Crane girl cries, pulling away from Jackson. She wipes her eyes and continues, "He hurt me, Jackson. I didn't sleep with the man. He slept with me."
"I know. I know. But, hey, we're leaving this place tomorrow, and we will be able to start over. Reed will be focused on ruining the lives of all the other residents and she will be out of your hair."
Violetta lets out a forced laugh, "Well, lets go take over Seattle Grace."
