The car ride was silent for a good amount of time. Calum had his eyes straight on the road.
"Did you have a good time?" Calum asked, breaking the silence. I was playing with the wheels of my skateboard and answered him.
"Yeah you guys are really chill," I said. He smiled.
"You're pretty cool yourself," he replied. "We never do challenges together, so this is a first," I looked at him, shocked.
"Seriously?" I asked. Calum nodded. "Don't worry, I’ll teach you my ways," I reassured him. Calum laughed. His laugh was fun and happy and made me smile.
"So you guys are in a band?" I asked. He nodded his head.
"Yeah we've been together for a while writing songs. I hope we can get farther than the basement someday," he said. His eyes lit up at the possibilities.
"Is that what you want to do?" I asked him. He smiled. "I always loved playing music. When I was asked to join the band, I pretended to be cool about it but honestly I would've jumped at the chance," he looked at me. "This stays between you and me yeah?" he asked. I nodded my head. "So what do you want to do?" he asked me. I turned my head out of the window.
"Uhhh... this is me," I said pointing to my house. "I'll get back to you on that," I said, and grabbed my stuff from the passenger seat. I was about to get out of the car when Calum grabbed my wrist.
"You can always stop over at my house, okay?" he told me. I smiled and nodded.
"Thanks Cal," I said. He smiled and let me go. I got out of the car and started walking to the front door. Before reaching the step, I looked back at the street. Calum was still waiting outside in his car, waiting for me to get inside. I waved my hand and took a deep breath before going inside. The house was dark except for the dim light from the kitchen. I tiptoed towards the stairs when my board hit the wall. The light flicked on in the hallway and someone came out of the kitchen. I sighed and turned around.
"Hey Will," I said. Will is my stepdad. My mom remarried after my dad walked out on us when I was ten. My mom was never really the same after. Will was a bartender where my mom always went to drink away her troubles. They dated for a few months before getting married. Will and I hated each other from the start. He hated my personality and my rebellion which made me rebel even more. The only reason he didn't do anything was because of my mom, but she was too out of it to notice. A year ago, my mom died in a car accident. It was Will's opportunity he'd been waiting for. From then on I was his slave. I did everything in the house and get him things, which frequently got me into trouble. Whenever he was drunk or in a bad mood, he could blow up at anytime. Tonight was one of those nights.
