modern au. mike tries to get el to come to a football game.

"i guess we both did some unexpected things,"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"why do you read all the time?" mike whispered to the curly haired girl with her nose stuck in a book in the library.
"i don't know, why are you so annoying all the time?" she asked, without glancing up or shifting her gaze.
"im not annoying," mike whispered aggressively.
"yeah ok, mike," el giggled, "and im trying out for the football team,"
"what do you have against football?"
"everything," el whispered, turning to mike, "the concept of football and the social norms that go along with football are stupid. watch a ball that everyone's tackling everyone for,"
"hey, i like it,"
"and that should make me like it?"
"well. aren't we friends?" mike asked.
"no. we're not," el said, turning back to her book.
"well whatever. i think you hate football because everybody thinks you're supposed to hate it," mike accused.
"what!" el said loudly.
the surrounding people shushed her.
"what?" she said much quieter.
"you've never been to a football game,"
"yeah. there's no real reason to," el said.
"well, im a starting linebacker. there's a reason," mike said, "come to a game. you won't regret it,"
"yeah. in your dreams, wheeler," el said, leaning back in her chair, "never have. never will,"
mike let out a long sigh and left the library.
el's eyes left the book to glance up at mike for a second. she watched his tall figure walk straight out of the library.
then she thought.
maybe a football game wouldn't be so bad.
~~~~~~~~~

mike sweat a lot during games and even more before they started. he just got really nervous. it was because everything that led up to the very first play was far too extravagant, but it did give him and his buddies enough time to review plays.

then they would hear the band play and they would get ready to go out.

so when he came out this time, he listened to the crowd that screamed the quarterback's name and the cheerleaders that screamed their mascots name. mike glanced over at the crowd and he saw everybody standing up and cheering.

but there was one person sitting, burying their face in a book.

it was her.

she didn't look at the field, only at the words on the pages of her book. she kept flipping through them. then she looked up, straight at mike.

he let out a breath and smirked at her.

she blushed on looked back at her book.

mike put his hands on his face and chuckled.

she came.

~~~~~~~
halfway through the second half, mike got hurt. bad. when somebody took him to the ground, they held his knee at a weird angle. and then mike tried to get up, but it was like he was being stabbed over and over and again and then somebody poured hot lava over his knee. so they took him away on a stretcher. everybody clapped.
he looked over and el, and her face expressed concern. her mouth was open and she was surprised. then she took her book and went towards the exit. she left.
that seemed to hurt just as bad as the hot lava.
~~~~~~

they took him into a little tent and treated his knee, putting a shit ton of ice on it until it was numb. so his knee was in a big ass cast-like thing.

then the tent was empty.

he could hear the crowd cheering and booing and reacting to every play made in a game he wasn't in. so he took and read a magazine.

"hey. i see you're actually reading," said a voice.

mike didn't hear anybody enter the tent, but he saw el standing there, holding the tent flap open. she was smiling and held her book to her chest.

mike chuckled as she neared the bedlike thing he was in,  and he said,"hey. i see you actually came,"

el tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, "i guess we both did some unexpected things,"

she walked up to him until she was seated in the chair close to the head of the bed, and asked: "what happened out there, champ?"

mike laughed at the nickname, "some guy pinned my knee to the ground. i saw you leave. why?"

el blushed, "well. i was going to. but.....i don't know. i just thought you'd get lonely in this stupid tent,"

"you were right," mike laughed, "thanks for coming back. the paramedics are on their way to fix the bone. my parents are meeting me at the hospital. can you stay with me in the paramedic car thingy?"

el gave him a soft smile, "uh...if i can. totally,"

mike smiled and opened his palm up. mike looked at el and then his hand. el's eyes widened. she lifted her own hand reluctantly, and let it go towards mike's until eventually, her hand was resting on his.

mike intertwined their fingers and warmed her cold hand. el just started at their clasped hands.

"hey el," mike said.

"what?" she asked, surprised like she just snapped out of some dream.

"do you wanna go out sometime?"

this kinda sucked, but i think it's short and sweet.  i don't know, what do ya'll think?
