mike and el go to visit mama ives.
"that's all you want to say to the mother of your girlfriend?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"how far are we?" mike asked.
"about two more miles," el replied. she was in the passenger seat, hugging her knees to her chest. mike was driving, drumming his fingers on the wheel to the duran duran song playing on the radio.
"how long has it been?" mike asked.
el leaned her head against the window, "a month. but i call becky every now and then to see how she's doing,"
mike smiled, and glanced at the next driveway, reading the numbers, " did you say it was five one five?"
"yeah. it's not this one. it's the next one," el said. el stared off into the distant horizon. the sun was setting. usually el goes with hopper to visit her mom, but hopper was busy on his date with joyce byers tonight. so el asked mike if he would take her. plus, el was nearly eighteen now. she would be a legal adult.
mike had never met eleven's mom. the only thing he knew is what she told her; that her mind was fried by the bad men, but she was still in there, deep down. mike could never imagine her life. he couldn't imagine not knowing who his dad was or have a mom whose brain was unjustly fried.
eleven sat upright in her seat, "turn here,"
mike twisted his wheel so that he could pull into the driveway. He parked in front of the cute little cottage and took both his and el's bag from the trunk before locking the car.
el was already knocking at the front door before mike even locked the car. mike went up and stood next to eleven. there was no response so el knocked again.
"go away, i don't want your girl scout cookies or whatever you're selling," a distant voice said aggressively.
el cleared her throat, "becky, it's me. it's jane."
there was no verbal response, but mike did hear a shift of something along with the thumps of nearing footsteps. then mike heard her open a lock. then the door was opened.
becky was a sweet looking lady. she had short blonde curly hair and she covered herself with a knitted sweater. she smiled upon seeing el and embraced her, asking, "how've you been, jane?"
el pulled away from the hug after saying, "okay,"
becky's eyes then landed on the young boy with freckles sprinkled on his face. she drew her eyebrows together before asking, "who's this?"
"my boyfriend, mike," el clarified, "hopper had other things to do, so he drove me,"
mike smiled nervously and put his bags down, and held out his hand, "it's nice to meet you, finally,"
becky eyed him, suspiciously, then shook his hand, saying, "you seem like a respectable gentleman. jane talks about you every time you every time she comes over,"
mike glanced over at el, who blushed, before saying, "he's sleeping over with me,"
"yeah," becky said, "come on in so you guys can get settled. i'll take your stuff,"
mike nodded and picked up the bags. as becky led them through the corridor, mike noticed how adorable the house was. it was tiny but held so much. there were things hung on the wall, papers strewn on the table, and books shoved into bookshelves. the wallpaper was floral with warm colors welcoming the couple. as they passed through the hallways, they finally came upon the main room, where mike handed the bags to becky.
