"so..........el brought money," lucas said to mike.

"yeah? so?"

"she's definitely going to bid on you!"

"no. ew, gross," mike said, "why would she bid for me?"

"because she loves you"

"lucas, c'mon," mike said, "she hates me. just because she helps my dad with the lawn doesn't meant that she likes me. god, i hate being neighbors with that girl."

"i'm serious, mike!" lucas yelled, "just.....be prepared for anything,"

mike took a deep breath in.

lucas, mike, and a few other boys were standing in a long line against the back of the gym wall, while their principal gave a speech about their tradition.

the tradition with was that eighth-grade boys would auction off a lunch with themselves in order to raise money for the school. they would have their home made lunch in a picnic basket and a bouquet of flowers to present the girl who would bid.

"she's probably bidding on someone else," mike whispered, as the girls from the audience clapped in anticipation, waiting to bid on their guy.

"doubt it," lucas whispered.

first up was gaten, who was immediately bid upon at five dollars. most bids never exceeded ten dollars.

mike was fifth in line.

gaten went first.

then troy would go.

then lucas.

then some nerd named will.

then mike.

mike had mixed feelings about el.

he wasn't sure if he wanted el to bid. because even after all those years of trying to get away from that family and their strange traditions, suddenly, mike saw her in a different light. he didn't know exactly how to describe it. but she was beautiful.

but he kept the facade of hating her.

lucas stepped up and only one person called his name, and that was his girlfriend max, sitting in the fourth row, next to an unsatisfied el. el looked bored. she did have a five dollar bill in her hand, but it was in a clenched fist, her arms crossed over her chest.

mike wanted to put a smile on that face.

next up was will. will was tiny, small and quiet. so when the teacher asked who wanted to bid on will, there was silence. it was so quiet, that mike could hear his heart beating.

"anybody?" the teacher asked.

everybody remained silent.

there were some kids laughing at the fact that no one wanted to bid on him.

will looked down, defeated.

suddenly, "five dollars,"

everybody looked to see where the voice was coming from; mike traced it to el. el raised her hand shyly, with the five dollars scrunched up in her hand.

what?

mike felt a small fire burning in his heart. he saw as a large smile swept across will and el's faces as they gazed at one another for a few seconds. what on earth could they be smiling about? nobody said anything funny. why couldn't mike make her smile? mike would've made her smile bigger if he had a shot.
