hawkins au where they all lived a normal life, but troy is still an asshole

"i'm the boyfriend, madame, it is my only duty,"

el hated math class.

it was probably put into existence by some demon who wanted a subtle punishment that would haunt your life because of its vast and infinite capabilities. it was created to help the world progress, el understood that; but why did everybody have to go so deep into math? couldn't we have stopped at finding the area? better yet, after learning multiplication?

but el hated math class for another reason other than the concept itself.

troy was seated right next to her, constantly breathing down her neck. she hated having him there, just watching her every move, occasionally cheating off her test. plus, he would often flirt with her and try to invade her privacy and talk about her very personal life. not just ask about it; invade it and crush it.

el was a particularly lonely and shy girl, too. she didn't talk to very many people in that class, so there was never a chance for her to turn away or make an excuse not to talk to him.

this particular day, he was being rather obnoxious. el was eating some pretzels out of a bag.

"hey, you know you probably don't need that," troy said, eying the pretzels.

el raised her eyebrows, "what? the pretzels?"

troy nodded, "more food, more calories, more fat, and you don't need that,"

el bit her lip, drawing her eyes together, then nodded, "yeah, you're probably right,"

but she didn't put them away. in fact, she took a handful and shoved it into her mouth.

troy scoffed, "that's disgusting. if you're gonna be my girlfriend, you can't be fat,"

suddenly el started coughing. choking, then she cleared her throat, calming herself, swallowing her food, before saying, "your what?"

"My girlfriend. i know you wanna be, but you're just too shy," he said casually, placing his hand over hers.

el withdrew her hand quickly, "no, i can't do that because-"

"she already has one," someone said, placing their arm on her shoulder. el looked up behind her to see a boy with jet black hair, wearing a striped shirt and khaki pants. el smiled softly. he smiled back, then returned his gaze to troy, "i don't know what you're trying to do, hitting on my girl, but please stay away. or next time i won't ask so nicely,"

"c'mon," troy said, laughing, leaning back in his chair, his arms crossed, "am i really supposed to believe that you've been in this class the whole time and never talk to each other? nice try. i bet you don't even know this kid's name,"

el looked up directly at troy and said, "herbert,"

the boy started giggling and chuckling, and troy scoffed. the boy squeezed her shoulder, his laughter dying down, "nah. that's just her cute nickname for me. i don't know how it went from mike to herbert though,"

el turned around, looking up, pretending to remind him of a non-existent memory, "it was because of the thing,"

mike raised his eyebrows, giggling, "oh yeah, that thing. yeah, he wouldn't get it,"

troy scoffed, "get what? how long have you two even been together,"

el pursed her lips, "like what, now? two months?"
