"There are different kinds of darkness," Rhys said. I kept my eyes shut. "There is the darkness that frightens, the darkness that soothes, the darkness that is restful." I pictured each. "There is the darkness of lovers, and the darkness of assassins. It becomes what the bearer wishes it to be, needs it to be. It is not wholly bad or good."
~ Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Mist and Fury
Kylo
I pressed a button and stepped into the shower. The water was icy cold and I closed my eyes as it swept through my hair and over my body. The feeling took me back to the waterfall on Akiva where I sometimes washed myself, and for that moment it felt like I was back there, back in a place where I could breathe.
Reaching for the soap, I realised that there were scratch marks on my arm. They must've come from my fall yesterday. I smiled. They didn't hurt at the time. I began to work the soap into my hair and then scrubbed myself slowly, starting from my neck and moving downwards. There was a knock at the door.
I hesitated. It was still pretty early, although most people were up once the sun was. Perhaps there was some kind of emergency meeting.
"Yes?"
"Kylo. It's me."
Rey's soft voice came from the other side of the door. I froze, sponge halfway up my chest.
"Can I come in?"
What was she doing here? I glanced down. I was covered in nothing but soap suds.
"Uh, yes." I replied, drawing the curtain across to cover most of myself. Then the door opened and Rey stepped inside. She was in her nightgown and her hair was a wild mess of brown. She looked up at me with a devilish grin as the door closed behind her.
"What are you doing here?" I asked her, trying to determine her mood.
"Nothing really, just wanted to see you." she answered, stepping closer. Her smile widened and she added, pointing "You've got a little something in your hair."
I chuckled nervously. The fabric of her nightgown was a pale blue, almost see-through, and it's hem hovered around her thighs. She walked over to the sink and leaned on the edge, eyeing herself in the mirror. Her nightgown rose up even higher and I swallowed.
"So, how did you sleep?" I asked, disappearing behind the curtain again.
"Like a baby." she replied, and I could sense her smiling. She was thinking about yesterday, the time we spent in the woods hunting banshees that were determined to evade us. We didn't actually catch anything, but it was fun. I remembered how we'd sprinted through the trees, the midnight air cutting across our faces, and how we'd eventually come to a clearing and realised that we'd been running in circles. For moment I thought she was annoyed but then she suddenly cracked up with laughter. It felt good, really good, that she was happy.
"Me too." I said, beginning to rinse the soap out of my hair. I closed my eyes and felt the water rush over my face. "Any plans for today?" I asked her.
"Mm not really." I heard her say from behind the curtain, "Was hoping to get some training done, haven't used a blaster in while."
"Oh okay." I said, opening my eyes. "Sounds like a good idea."
"Yeah." she said after a pause. "I had another idea though."
"Oh really?" I asked her. "And what was that?" A million thoughts ran through my head at once but they all seemed to point in one general direction.
"Well." she began, taking a step towards the curtain "That shower looks pretty big."
My whole body tensed beneath the icy water as I realised what she was suggesting. But what if someone came looking for us? What would they say? Forget them, I said to myself. What do you want right now?
