"Rain didn't make things messy. People did that all on their own."

~Barbara Delinsky, The Secret Between Us

Rey

"What?" Finn stared at me as if he couldn't understand a word I was saying. "What do you mean he's here?"

"I mean he came back with me. He's probably with the General now."

Finn let out a frustrated sigh and turned away. He was wearing a different uniform to the last time I saw him. This one was grey with red and black stripes running down his arms and his feet were clad with heavy black boots. When I arrived he'd pulled me in for an enormous hug and his smell made me feel like I was finally home.

Now he stood, with his back to me, and I could tell that things weren't going to be the same.

"You brought a Sith Lord...to the Resistance base." he said, summarising everything I'd just told him. "Do you realise exactly how dangerous that is?" his tone was flat as he tried to suppress his anger.

I took a step towards him. "I know it's alot to take in, but Kylo isn't here to hurt us. He's changed since you saw him last and--"

Finn spun around suddenly. "And not only did you bring him back with you, but you let him train you for weeks!" his eyes were burning. "I spent those weeks worrying about you, hoping that you were safe, and you were frolicking around the galaxy with a Sith Lord!"

Although I tried, I couldn't find the right words to say. I dropped my gaze to the floor.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner." I said after a while "But I thought you of all people would understand what he's been through."

Finn sighed again, seeming slightly calmer. "I understand Rey. But people like him, I've seen them in action. They're heartless tyrants who will stop at nothing to get what they want. He killed his own father for goodness sake."

I winced, not wanting to relive that painful memory. Finn continued. "Look Rey, I don't even care about him, I just want you to be safe, and he is the very definition of danger. Why would you even put yourself at risk like that?"

"I needed a teacher." I said truthfully, although it didn't seem to cover it.

"Yes, but why would you even trust him in the first place?" He seemed even more confused now than he had been earlier.

"I don't know Finn. I don't know" I replied, staring out through the window. Neither of us spoke for a while until a thought crossed my mind.

"Finn, what was bothering you before I left?"

He looked at me. "What?"

"I know there was something bothering you. What was it?"

Finn's brow creased and he looked away. "Nightmares."

Moving closer to him I placed a hand gently on his shoulder. "About what?"

He shook his head. "About everything. Everything I did when I was a storm trooper. All the innocent lives I took. The screams." He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

"I'm so sorry Finn. You should've told me." I said, as I realised that it must've been going on for a while.

"I didn't want to weigh you down. And besides, I stopped having them after a while. But having that monster back here just--"

"Stop." I said, taking my hand off of his shoulder quickly. "Don't call him that."

Finn's eyes searched mine, as if he was trying to find what had changed. "Why do you care so much?" he asked.

"He's changed, that's all" I replied, avoiding eye contact. "He's a different person."

"Seems you know him a lot better that I do." Finn replied, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

I blushed, remembering the kiss Kylo had given me before we landed. It was deep and  unexpected, leaving me breathless. But now it felt like a goodbye kiss.

Finn's eyes narrowed suddenly. "What's going on with you two?"

"What?" I said, snapping out of my daydream. He was looking at me with suspicion. "Nothing's going on."

"Don't lie to me Rey." he said, "You've been acting weird about him since you got here."

I glanced at him and then looked away, folding my arms. How was I meant to explain this to him when he had already been so against having Kylo here in the first place?

"Do you...have feelings for him?" he asked.  I looked up quickly trying to read his face and then looked away again. There was nothing to say.

Finn stood there and stared at me as if I was a total stranger. "I can't believe this." he said after a pause. "But how? More importantly why?"

All of a sudden I felt a wave of irritation sweep over me. What right did Finn have to judge me? He didn't know Kylo. He didn't understand.

"Look I didn't expect you to be all sunshine and smiles, but I thought you'd at least be happy for me. Instead you're making me feel like the enemy here!" I gave him an angry glare and he stared back, his eyes stone cold.

"I need some air." he said. Then he turned and left without another word.

I stood for a moment, listening to the heavy sound of his footsteps as they became more and more distant. Then I buried my face in my palms and let out a silent scream. Why did he have to make this so difficult for me?

"Are you alright?" I heard a mechanical voice behind me ask. Turning I saw a droid, a few inches taller than me and covered from head to toe in metallic gold. He was staring at me through his expressionless eyes.

"It seems things with you and Master Finn got rather heated." he said.

"And who exactly are you?" I asked. I didn't need to unload my feelings on a droid, especially a nosy one like this one.

"I am C-4PO, a translator and personal service droid. How may I be of assistance Master Rey?"

So he knew my name.

"Well you can leave me alone. That  would be a good start."  I answered, turning and marching off down the hallway. To my surprise, and mild annoyance, he followed me.

"But it would not be very polite of me to leave you in such a state. You seem quite tense."

I paused and looked at him. "I'm fine."

"You most certainly are not fine." he insisted. "I suggest an open and civil conversation with the person who has upset you." I sighed. "I don't think he's ready to have an open and civil conversation with me." I replied, feeling downcast.

"Well then may I suggest engaging in something productive or relaxing." he spouted out from his programming.

I laughed.

"Have I amused you Master Rey?"

"It's just the way you talk." I said, the smile on my face lingering . "So what exactly do you think I should do?"

The droid paused, his features impossible to read. I took it he was thinking.

"I could give you a tour." he said after a few seconds. "The base has certainly gained some new facilities since you were last here."

I considered this. There was no way I was going to look for Finn, and everyone else seemed to be busy with preparations. Kylo was with his mother, there was no way I was walking in on that.

"Why not." I answered with a shrug. "Lead the way...what did you say your name was again?"

"C-4PO. Translator and personal service droid."
