The Right Moment

I jolted awake when I heard a knock at the door.

"Yea?"

When the door opened I saw Zander standing there holding a tray. A smile spread across his face when he saw me sitting up and brought the tray over. I couldn't hide my surprise and happiness to see that he brought me breakfast.

"I thought you might be hungry so I decided to bring the breakfast to you."
He placed the tray on my lap then settled onto the foot of the bed. My stomach twisted in hunger at the smell of hot pancakes and bacon. I picked up the fork and dug in.

"Edie, I know you don't want to talk about it. But the way I found you. What happened last night?"

I stopped in mid chew and looked up at him. His expression was grim and his eyes searched my face for answers. I swallowed hard and sat there looking at him for a moment before answering.

"A misunderstanding."

"What kind of misunderstanding leaved you crying violently naked in a puddle of water on a bathroom floor."

I shrugged my shoulders at him. I didn't know what to say to him.

"I had slipped getting out of the tub after arguing. That's all." I lied.

I could tell by the expression on his face he wasn't buying it.

"We both know that's not what happened. Edie I'm not stupid. We have known each other over two years. I've seen what he does. Trying to lie and cover for him isn't going to work, at least not with me. Come on, it's me you're talking to you can tell me anything."

I stared into those deep chocolate eyes as my heart raced. I wanted to throw myself in his arms and cry. I wanted to tell him every bad thing that happened last night and tell him how scared I was. I wanted to tell him every feeling I've ever had about him. Instead I settled to tell him the just the truth of last night.

"Just what usually happens that's all."

Lair. Why don't you tell him the truth.

Tears silently rolled down my face. He grabbed my hand and give it a light squeeze. He kissed my forehead and picked the tray up to take it downstairs. I pushed all the memories of last night out of my head and tried the tears off my face. I was in the middle of changing when I heard the doorbell. I quickly finished getting ready and went downstairs.

I saw a delivery man bringing a box into the house. He paused when he saw me.

"Are Mrs.Novak, ma'am?"

"Yes." I answered while walking closer to the box.

"Sign here."

I quickly jotted my name down on the paper he gave me. I looked the box over and saw it had no return address. I looked up at Zander in confusion and he shrugged his shoulders. I went to the kitchen and got a knife and began opening the box.

I carefully cut open the tapped areas and peered inside. I pulled out canvases and a portable easel paint case. At the bottom of the box was a note that read:

To my love.
   -L

I knew immediately who had sent the box. I looked back at all the things that were in box. I knew he was sorry. If it wasn't then why would he send all this?

"Does it say who it's from?"

I looked up to see Zander starring at me.

"Larc." I slightly smiled as I gathered the items to take upstairs.

"Edie?"

I turned to face him as he called my name.

"Why do you do this?"

I tilted my head in confusion. "What do you mean?"

Zander stepped closer to me. "Why do you let him do this? Buy you off with gifts after beating you?"

I winced at his question. I wouldn't exactly say I was beginning beaten. Larc would just push me around. I mean I never had to go to the hospital.
"He's just drunk. He doesn't know what he's doing. He never hits me sober. Zander he's not a bad person he just has bad habits."

Zander ran his hands through his hair in frustration. "How long are you going to lie to yourself, Edie? He's not going to change."

I could feel my own frustration growing. I decided to not answer his question and just go up to my studio.

How dare he question me like this. I know what I'm dealing with and he can change. Can't he?

I pushed all thoughts out of my head and grabbed a handful of brushing before going back downstairs. I snatched the easel and canvas up before turning to face Zander.

"I'll be outside!" I spat at him with anger in my eyes.

I walked across the backyard past the pool and garden. I stopped at the tree line that bordered the edge of the yard and sat my things down. I wanted to forget about our conversation and calm all the thoughts that were whirling through my head.

I was facing the woods in deep concentration when I heard someone walking behind me. I turned around to see Zander standing there. The sun glistened in his hair and made his eyes light up. He nervously ran his hand through his thick hair before stepping closer to me.

"I just wanted to come and apologize for how I acted. I shouldn't have been so harsh."

His chocolate eyes fell to the ground as he fell silent. I stepped closer filling the gap between us and grabbed his hand.

"I know you're just trying to look out for me." I whispered.

He raised his head so that he was looking into my eyes. As I felt his stare deepen, my face began to blush and I pulled my hand away from his. I turned back to my painting when I heard him start walking away. He paused then turned around to come back towards me. I felt his hand softly grip my shoulder and spin me around. Before I could say anything, Zander quickly crashed his lips into mine. I stood frozen then my lips began to move with his as I ran my hands through his hair.
