Zander and I were sitting in the livingroom watching TV when Larc came slightly stumbling in.
"Come on Edie dear we are going out tonight. Some old friends are in town and invited us to dinner." He leaned against the door frame.
"Are you sure you're okay to go?" I asked. It was clear that he had been drinking before coming home.
His eye flared with anger, "of course I am. Why wouldn't I be?" He started to walk towards me.
I quickly looked down at the floor. I've never seen such anger in him before. Once I thought about it, I've never seen him drunk either. I jolted off the couch to escape his glare. I quickly changed into a simple dress and came back down.
"That's what you're wearing?" Larc spat at me.
"What's wrong with it?" I furrowed my brows together and asked.
He walked up the stairs and stopped when he was right beside me. He leaned in a whispered, "everything." He then continued to walk upstairs to our bedroom. I turned to follow and once I got to the bedroom he was digging through my closet. After a few minutes he pulled out a dress and threw it at me.
"Here." He shot a look at me then went back downstairs.
I nervously shifted the fabric in my hands. I didn't want to go anywhere with him like this but I thought wiser than to protest. I slipped on the ivory colored lace dress he handed me and went back downstairs. Larc was waiting by the door.
"Zander is bringing the car around." Larc grabbed my hand and led me outside.
The car ride was painfully silent as we drove to the restaurant. I'd steal glances at Larc as Zander drove us. He starred out the window the whole time. I couldn't help but to think I did something wrong. I decided i would ask him about it once we were home. This was not the time or place. He didn't turn his head towards me until Zander parked the car. Larc quickly came around and opened my car door, but the grip on my arm was tighter than usual.
"Vivan. Theodore, this is my wife Edie. Edie this is Vivan and Theodore. Life long friends since I was a child." Larc plastered a fake smile on his face as he introduced us.
I sat through dinner watching him act completely different than what he was at the house. At the house he was hateful and cold. In front of his friends he was beginning his usual warm friendly self. I shrugged it off as he was having a bad day earlier, but I still wanted to talk about it when we got home. I was considered with how many drinks he was ordering.
One, two, three...
If he had been drinking before coming home, then he shouldn't be drinking so much here. I tried to keep my gaze on my plate when his eyes would meet mine. I listened to the conversation and answered appropriately. When dinner was over and we said our goodbyes, we went outside as Zander brought the car. It was like a light switch turning off. Larc went back to the cold expression he had before dinner.I rehearsed what I was going to say over and over in my head as we drove home. Larc went back to staring out the window until we were in the driveway. He flung the car door open and went up the stairs to open the door. I quickly exited the car and followed him. A lump formed in my throat that was making me unable to speak. I had never been scared to ask him anything before, but something about his mood was dark. I finally forced myself to speak.
"Larc." His name was all that would stumble out of my mouth.
"What." He spat as he whirled around to look at me. His eyes darted all over my face and I could see the annoyance on his face. "Well don't just stand there like an idiot. What the hell do you want."
I could fell the tears swelling up in my eyes. "Why are you being so hateful! What did I do!" I couldn't hold them back, tears streamed down my face.
