Everyone has procrastinated at some point or another in their lifetime. Of course, there are lazy procrastinators that use generic excuses such as they need to wash the dishes or fold their laundry. There are also skilled procrastinators with very good excuses; such as watching their dog and not wanting to leave him alone for even 10 minutes in fear that he will think he was abandoned. After all, if you were 3 weeks old and was taken from your mother wouldn't you be wary about being left alone for a while?Glancing back down at Duke rolling around on cool tile, rolling around in a circle on his side, it brought another task that I'd have to deal with. Who watches him when I would be at work. I'm starting work tomorrow at a small cafe from 9am to 1pm, and working at a library 2pm to 6pm. This would be my new schedule every Monday to Friday until I find a higher paying job.
Upon hearing Duke whine at me from the floor, I decided I should bring him outside before he peed on my tile. Being dresses and ready to go, I attached his leash to his collar and swept him back into my arms. From past experience, I learned that when Dukes feet get cold from tiles, he has a tendency to pee then and there. Making sure I had the keys to my apartment, I locked the doors on the way out.
The nice thing about my apartment building was the fact that it had a nice large backyard that was for everyone, and my apartment was a floor and 2 hallways from it. Entering the stairwell, I shivered from the cool air hitting my exposed legs. With each step I took down the stairs, my footfalls rang throughout the concrete walls. An uneasy feeling was slowly filling me as I reached the base of the stairwell. Thinking I wasn't the only one in there, I stopped. Much to my dismay footsteps continued.
I shifted the way Duke was settled in my arms and pulled him closer to me. If someone were to have seen the action, it would've resembled the way a child holds onto their stuffed animal or favorite blanket. I quickly rushed outside to let Duke do his business and get outside of the stairwell ASAP.
Being such a heavy door, I heard the loud groan it made when letting it shut behind me. Setting Duke down, I kept hold of his leash and let him frolic around the yard. Watching him growl at a spider, and yelp after the insect moved, brought me into an almost state of tranquility. It was enticing to see, knowing that Duke will one day be so massive compared to a skateboard, let alone a tiny spider.
Wrapped up in such a small, yet beautiful moment of time, I nearly jumped as high as a building when hearing the loudest door to exist groan closed. I frantically turned around to see what could've caused it. Once seeing what caused it, I was instantly relieved. Brendon stood there, a hand still on the door handle and the other holding a pack of cigarettes, with a look of shock and concern on his face. His eyebrow was cocked so high, that still only managed to reach the midpoint of his forehead due to the abnormal size.
Walking towards me, he started talking in such an excited manner. "Oh hey Cassie! I'm so tired right now you would not believe it. Pete was snoring all night long and no we weren't sharing the bed because it was cold like other times but I was in my own room on the opposite end of the apartment! Did you hear it from across the hall? I wouldn't be surprised he's as loud as a 747 going through the desert. Anyways yesterday was-OH MY GOSH IS THAT DUKE??"
Duke, upon hearing his name, abruptly stopped frolicking and shot his head up as if to prove that he was paying attention and was always ready to be of service. Brendon starting giggling uncontrollably and set his cigs on the ground, while continuing to stare at Duke. Watching them just stare at each other, felt as if I was spying on an intimate moment between a couple. That all changed as soon as Brendon ran towards Duke.
They ran towards each other as if they were a long lost couple in the 50's seperated from the war. Brendon dove to the ground to lay on his back, as Duke jumped on top of him while yipping in a happy manner. They showered the other with kisses and hugs, squealing and whining in excitement; the squealing mainly done by Brendon.
After 2 minutes of the affair continuing, he sat up with Duke on his lap. They both were panting, out of breath from how intensely they were showing their love for each other. Anyone passing by that saw Brendon's face would've thought he was high as a kite he was so blissed out.
"Cassie....your dog is now my dog. We have some difficult news you might not want to hear but you need to. We are in love and we will live together forever now."
"Sure. Have fun with that... Duke come here boy!". He ran over to me, leaving Bren with a frown on his face, and immediately sat in between my legs.
"I like hanging out with you, you know?" He asked, a smile on his face.
"With me or my dog? You say you'll keep him but is Pete ok with it?"
"Of course! You think I overreacted? Pete is like that just x10! Seriously though, anytime you'll need us to take care of this floof ball just ask us. Ironically I came out here to smoke because I was stressed and you both helped me with that. Care to head inside now madame?"
"Why of course good fellow!". And with that he stood, stretching his long legs and he grabbed his pack of cigs. He held the door open for me like and gentlemen ans we were on our way.
