Day POV
I can't believe it. Today is the day I leave for college. Summer went by very quick. June and I didn't do all that much over the summer. Her parents wanted to go to Europe but she said she just wanted to stay home her last summer.
We swam in the ocean a lot. But the better, or should I say worse, part of the last month has been packing. I mean it's not a ton of stuff that needs to be packed it's just boring.
I walk into the kitchen where my parents are seated at the table drinking coffee. My mom points over to where she has set a mug for me. I pick it up and sit by my father at the table.
"Daniel. I wanted to talk to you." My dad says. "Do you think we could go sit outside?" He seems solemn.
"Sure." I walk outside with my dad and we sit on the lounge chairs that surround our fire pit.
"I just wanted to say..." He pauses. "That if you were to ever cheat on June I will disown you."
"Oh. I'm sure you won't have to worry about that Dad."
"I'd better not. Because I may not disown you but I would never forgive you. Even if June does."
"Dad I'm never going to cheat on her."
"Day I'm dead serious. Okay? Most college girls annoy the crap out of me. But I know June already and if I have to be the father-in-law of some blonde drunk that has three children not yours I'm losing it."
"Oh gosh Dad. You know I'd never do that. That's. Ew. Why did we even have this talk? Gross." I get up and walk away.
"We had this talk because I'm not an idiot and I used to be a teenager." My dad.
••••••
I ring the doorbell to June's house. Or I guess her parent's house. She won't live here much longer.
June opens the door and smiles at me.
"Hey." She says stepping aside so I can walk through the door. She closes it behind me.
"What's up?" She asks.
"Today is the last day you and I are living with our parents." I say. "And we won't see them for a while after this. So I thought I'd say goodbye to your parents."
"Oh okay." June says. She takes my hand and we both walk out to the back patio. Her parents are sitting at their outdoor table which is at the edge of the patio.
"Hi Day." Nadia says. "Today's you and June's last day in this neighborhood, most likely."
"Yeah." I say. June and I sit down at the table.
"I can't believe you guys are leaving today." Michael says.
"Yeah." June says. I can tell she's slightly annoyed.
"Well I just came to say goodbye to you guys." I say standing. "June you want to come over to see my parents and, to a lesser extent, Eden?"
"Sure." She says smiling and almost laughing.
Michael and Nadia stand up and walk us through the house and to the door.
"Okay." Nadia says. "Goodbye Day." She says. She pulls me into a hug and I wrap my arms around her briefly."Goodbye Nadia." I say nodding at her.
"Day just so you know..." Michael starts. "If you ever do anything to my daughter-"
"You'll have to get in line for that because my dad has already promised never to forgive me and basically disown me if I were to ever do anything to your daughter." Michael smiles slightly.
"Well then. Goodbye Daniel."
"Goodbye."
June and I walk out the door to my car. I turn toward her. She is so beautiful.
"Should we go now?" June asks. It's only then I realize I had zoned out."Yeah. Sure." I say.
••••••
June and I walk into my house. My
mom is sitting in the living room and I'm guessing Eden is upstairs. My dad walks in a few moments later."Hey June." My Mom says.
"Hey." She says. We go and sit down on the couch.
I take her hand in mine and she leans into me.
"So today is your last day here huh?" My dad asks.
"Yeah." June says.
"It's hard to believe." My Mom says. My dad sits down on the couch next to her.
"You guys want to watch this movie with us?" My dad asks. June looks at me and I nod.
"Sure." June says. "What movie?"
••••••
The movie finishes and Eden still hasn't come downstairs. June and I decide to go up and talk to him.
Eden is sitting at his desk playing around with a small machine he's torn apart and reassembled multiple times."Hey Eden." June says.
Eden looks over to both of us. "Hi." He says. He's always been a little socially awkward. He turns back around.
June walks over to his desk and sits next to him. "So listen." She says.
"Today's the day I'm leaving, and so is your brother. I wanted to come here to say goodbye to you. I'll miss you."
"Of course you know I will too Eden." I say. "You're honestly the most annoying and best brother I could ever have."
Eden laughs a bit at that. I walk over and sit down with him.
"I'm going to miss you guys too." He says. "It's going to be lonely here with me being the only kid at our parents combined dinners."
••••••
I throw the last of my things into the trunk and close it up. I'm at June's house along with both of our parents.
"Daniel sweetie are you sure you want to take this old truck?" My Mom asks. "You can have a different car."
"Yeah Mom. I'm sure." I look over to June. "I guess you could say it has, sentimental value."
"Well I wish you'd picked another car to have 'sentimental value' in because this thing is a piece of crap. Your father actually took me and him out on our first date in that car." June and I laugh.
"Sorry Mom." I say. June looks over at me smiling.
I walk over to June and wrap an arm around her waist.
"I guess now that we're leaving I don't have to be scared of your Dad's guns anymore." I whisper. She gives a sarcastic laugh.
"Maybe. But you'll have to worry aboutmine. And ammo isn't cheap so don't be expecting a warning shot." (A/N: kind of an old joke but yeah. Ammo prices aren't that high anymore I don't think)
"Oh I think you can afford it."
"Don't give me a reason to get my gun out in the first place and we'll be just fine."
"Alright then. Noted."
"June, Daniel! Time to leave!" My dad says. We take an awkward step away from each other and go to our cars.
"Goodbye Daniel. I love you." My Mom says.
"Love you too Mom."
I drive away starting with the same route I used to take to school, but after leaving our subdivision it changes quickly.
