Day P.O.V.
I'm walking around campus when my phone rings. I look to see that it's an unknown number. The area code is from here though. I decide to answer it.
I usually wouldn't but whatever."Hi." I say.
"Hello." A young girl on the other end of the line says. "I was calling because it seems you've been labeled as a contact for Miss June Iparis. Her parents have already been told and they're here as we speak."
"Told?" I ask. "Told what?"
"That Miss June was in a car accident. It seems as if she's in a coma."
The world around me seems to vanish. My homework doesn't matter anymore. Nothing but her matters anymore. And it makes me question if it ever did.
"Excuse me?" I ask.
"She will wake up, we know that. But there's no telling when or if she'll have her memory. She's suffered severe brain damage."
I walk to the other side of my room grabbing the keys to my car. "If her parents get there tell them I'm on my way." I say.
"Okay. I'll make sure to do that if I see them. But I'm a busy person."
"I understand. Thank you."
"Goodbye." She says.
I run out to my car and start it quickly. I make sure to be careful driving. Me ending up in a crash as well won't do June any good.
I run into the emergency entrance.
"Hi." I say to the woman at the desk.
"Hello. Who do you need to see?"
"June Iparis."
"You can't see her right now. But her parents should be in the waiting room down the hall on the left."
"Thanks." I say. I walk down the hall and find the large room. Nadia and
Michael are both sitting on one of those two people chairs. I sit in another chair near them."Hi Nadia." I say softly. I see the tears in her eyes. She wordlessly nods.
"We had them call as soon as we got here." Michael says. "I guess we assumed the nurse already had or something but we asked the nurse to call you once we were here."
••••••
After a few hours they let us go see her. She's still asleep of course. But at least she's alive. At least she'll live.
I sit down in a chair near her and her parents remain standing looking at her silently. None of us talk for a long time.
One week later
I wake up and get ready for my first class of the day. English.
June is still not awake. They are starting to think it will be a long time. But she's alive. She's alive. I just need to remember that.
I walk into my class and sit down toward the back.
I walk into the hospital waving slightly to the reception lady. She knows why I'm here by now.
It's been a whole week and June is still asleep. In a coma.
Her parents left after the first two days. They have to work after all.
I sit at the chair by her bed. I always do my homework here in case she were to wake up.
I finish my English essay by the time I leave. June is still asleep.
••••••
I wake up to the sound of my phone ringing. I answer.
"Hello. Is this Daniel Wing?"
"Yes." I say.
"This is the hospital. June Iparis has woken up and we were told to call you."
"Yeah. If you are someone who sees her tell her I'll be there in ten minutes."
"I don't but I think she'll manage." The woman says.
I sigh. "Okay. Thank you." I hang up.
I run out to my truck and drive quickly to the hospital. I run into the building and past the reception desk. The woman doesn't even give me a second glance. Once I get toward the entrance to the part of the hospital June is in someone stops me.
"Slow down sir." The old woman at the desk says.
"Sorry ma'am." I say.
"Who are you going to see?"
"June Iparis."
"Okay. Room two forty."
"Thanks." I open the door to the hallway with all of the rooms in it.
June is in the last room on the right.I walk in and she is asleep. She has been asleep for a week and the first thing she does after waking up is sleep?
I sit down in a chair next to her bed. A nurse walks into the room.
She rolls her eyes at June and walks up to her.
"June." She says softly. June doesn't move.
"Sugar could you do me a favor and wake her up for me?" The nurse asks turning to me. "I'll be back in just a minute."
"Sure." I say. The nurse turns and walks out of the door.
I look to June and see her open her eyes. That was easy. It takes all the restraint I have to not pull her out of bed into my arms. I haven't so much as hugged her in a week.
"Hi Day. What happened?"
"You were in a car crash."
"That doesn't sound good." She says.
"Where's my parents?"
"They're working I think."
"Oh. What day is it?"
"September 3rd."
"Oh okay." She says. The nurse walks back into the room.
"Hi June." She says. "You've missed some classes the past week. I had Daniel here call all of your teachers."
What time is it? I look over at the clock. 2am.
"I'll be okay." She says.
"Well you can't leave the hospital for a few more days." The nurse says.
She nods. I take her hand in mine and let out a breath. She's okay. She's okay. I could never live without her.
••••••
I take the bag with all of the things retrieved from June's car after the crash. Her phone and a few hair ties is most of it.
The car was completely totaled. I got a chance to see it yesterday. It was bad. June is leaving the hospital today.
I wrap an arm around her waist because I know it's the only way she'll accept help. And because I love her.
We walk outside and get into my car. I set her stuff on the floor next to her and walk around to the driver's seat.
I look over at June's slightly scratched up face. I take her hand in mine and kiss her forehead before starting the truck.
I want to spend the rest of my life with this woman.
