I wish I knew what time it was, the sun not yet directly overhead, but pretty close. Maybe another hour 'til noon? I stood outside of the many buildings that were adjoined and called high school. Being here was a bit intimidating, especially since I see young humans walking around every few seconds with the wind furiously pulling at their hair, just like mine. I finally worked up my courage to get myself over the invisible border my mind has made up that separated me from the property of the school.
A paved place for cars were off to the side of the buildings, but I was soon consumed by bricked walls.
"Hello," Someone said, and by the shrill of voice, I assumed it to be a lady. "Are you new here?"
I swirled around and found a young woman with thick glasses on her flawless face, cheeks rosy-pink, lips a deep set of purple, pushing a cart of what looks to be books.
"I'm trying to find Travis Miller." I stated, grateful for someone wanting to help me.
"Miller? Mrs. Miller is in her office, you'll have to visit with her first."
"You know Jennifer?" I asked, though I shouldn't be surprised.
"Yes, I do. Head mistress around here." She joked with a pretty laugh of her own, which only caused me to smile.
"Do you mind showing me to her office? I'm a family friend."
She nodded and turned her cart around, asking me to follow her. We made no small talk as we crossed the campus of school, Jennifer's office being at the front. We didn't have to walk long before the lady in front of me stopped.
"Here you go." She said, turning to me with a smile.
"Thank you." I smiled back, reaching for the door knob.
"Hey, uh, what's your name?" She asked me, capturing my attention again.
"Evanjaline." I introduced, holding my hand out before she could. It was the first time I initiated a hand shake. She took my hand in hers quickly.
"Vendetta. I like your name."
"I like yours as well."
She pulled her hand back and smiled at the ground. "See you around." She said, turning with her cart of books and walking back the way we came.
"Good bye." I said, hopefully loud enough for her to hear.
I opened the door that was labeled 'office' and peered inside, closing the door behind me.
"Hello." A red headed lady said behind a counter filled with paperwork, flyers of all different colors attached to the front.
"Hi, I'm here to see Mrs. Miller." I stated, walking over to the lady behind the desk.
"She'll be right with you, she has to deal with misbehaved boys at the moment. Have a seat and I'll buzz in to let her know you're here." I took a seat across from the desk, watching the lady pick up her phone in front of her and press only one button. "Hello, Jennifer. This is Margret, you have someone here waiting to see you." Margret paused to listen to what Jennifer had to say, then her eyes found me and she pulled the phone away from her mouth. "What's your name, dear?"
"Evanjaline."
"Ev... What?"
"Evanjaline." I said slower.
"Evanjaline. That's nice." Something Jennifer said caught her attention before she hung up. "Mrs. Miller will be with you shortly." She told me, turning back to filing paper.
I started to twist my hair between my fingers, waiting to kill time as I waited for Travis' mom to be free. About ten minutes pass before the principals office opens and two battered boys come walking out, heads hung low. I made eye contact with Jennifer before she walked over and sat down next to me.
