I sat out of reach of the water next to Travis, while Xya was pacing. She slowly but surely started to create a path. She was scolding me. On a normal day, I wouldn't have tolerated anything like this from anyone but father. But I understood where she was coming from. The secret that kept everything at peace between mermaids and humans has been passed from a mermaid to a human in less than two days.
"I cannot believe that you told someone already, princess!" Xya shouted at me. I kept my eyes on the sand at the tips of my shoes, my knees being pulled up at my chest. "A boy! Not a man. I bet his voice hasn't even dropped." She continued to pull at some strands of her hair that cascaded down over her shoulders, covering herself from completely flashing a not-so-innocent Travis.
He's already seen me naked a few times.
The tips of Xya's hair tickled the back of her knees.
"Excuse me?" Travis said deeply.
Oh please, just let Xya rant! It won't last much longer until she sighs and wants to change the subject.
"You heard me, human. How can I possibly trust a boy?" She sneered out the last word, bending at the waist to come face to face with my new overly stubborn best friend.
"Evanjaline has." Travis narrowed his eyes slightly.
"Foolishly." Xya straightened up, turning to me. "Why?"
"Because Travis promised to help me find Harry."
She sighed and sat down in front of me with her calves under her. "Your father wasn't easy to talk with, but I convinced him to give you a week before he comes on land himself and brings you back. He threatened to keep you on lock down. Isolate you from the outside world as much as he can."
"He already has." I said quietly, looking down and away.
"He just wants you safe. Maybe you should come back. You shouldn't test his patience."
"I want love, Xya. Harry... I know he's the one."
"How? You've seen him but of one time! How do you know he would even love you back in a weeks time?"
"He started a spark in me. Maybe I've done the same for him."
"Is defying your father and proving him wrong, that important to you?"
Travis stayed quiet while Xya and I spoke. I shifted my eyes to peek at him and his arms rested on his bent knees, watching my face. I turned back to my naked friend in front of me.
"He is wrong. I want to feel what he's so afraid of. I know that love exists."
"Because you've seen it." She said matter-of-factly. I've told her the story of the couple on the boat countless of times. It was a precious story.
"Do you have any News?" I asked, starting to get frustrated with my barnacle of a friend.
"Just that of which I told you with your father."
"Will you be staying on land?"
"No. Your father wants reports back about you. And I should be getting back." She gracefully got to her feet and so did I. Travis stood soon after I started to follow Xya to the water. "Find Harry quickly. Your father is planning on his 'I told you so' speech."
"Of course he is." I said, rolling my eyes.
"Princess," She placed a hand on my shoulder. "No more people need to know about us." Her eyes darted to Travis, then back to me. "Harry will have to know if all goes well, but no more humans. It's not safe."
