Let Me Show You

4. Hunters

        I jump off the bus and run around the house to the back so I can climb up to the balcony. How Romeo & juliet like... Except I'm Romeo and my best guy-friend, Hunter, is Juliet. His lights are on so he must be awake. I knock on the balcony door gently before opening it to find Hunter wearing only a towel.

        "I need your help" I blurt out. He jumps around obviously startled and his towel slips off. "oh god..." I practically force out as I have to cover my eyes.

        "Hah sorry Kota, I didn't realize you were coming over tonight" he says nervously trying to recover his towel. I give him a questioning look and he responds with "I'm having someone over..." Seeing as I am still confused he adds "a girl, I'm having a girl over, and I really like her so it's probably not a good idea for her to see you here with me after I have just taken a shower."

        "Ohhh my gosh, yeah that would be bad!" After a long pause he goes to get changed and explains everything about this girl he supposedly likes named Anna. Once he is changed into a shirt and pants, I run over and hug him. "I'm so happy for you! It must be so nice to have someone that... actually... cares" and with that I burst into tears sobbing into his clean shirt. "I'm so sorry, it's just, something bad has happened. I got in a fight with my parents and now I'm leaving the country."

        "Leaving the country?" He yells pushing me back to look at my face which is probably black from lack of waterproof eyeliner and mascara. "What happened that is making you leave the country?"

        "Well, I got a job... a REALLY good job and I cannot turn it down." I explain everything to him, even spilling the coffee everywhere, and by the end he is practically crying with me. "So, now I have to get on a plane for London in three days or less and I have nothing. No money, no car, no extra clothes nothing!"

        "Listen, Kota, I can lend you some money right now but you have to leave right after that because Anna is coming over and I cannot mess this up." He says dead serious.

        "I will be able to pay you back don't worry I just am not sure when and how, but I will get the money to you, I promise."

        "With interest" he adds.

        I laugh as I add "with interest" to our deal. After that, he hands me a bank card with a good deal of money on it, a sweatshirt, a freshly made sandwich and one last hug before I go.

        "Morning sunshine!" A familiar voice sings as I open one eye at a time and remember where I am. Speaking of sunshine would you mind closing the curtains so I can sleep, it's been a long night, I think, secretly wanting to ask her. "My assistant called last night and said you were going to sleep here, but I thought I was dreaming!" She laughs revealing her perfectly aligned snow-white teeth. "I'm glad you accepted the job, I showed your pictures to some of my co-workers and they ate them up! You're already quite popular around here!" She winks and I begin to see how beautiful and... young she is.

        "Can I ask you something?"

        "You just did" she laughs again. At least one of us is in a good mood.

        "Umm, yeah I guess I did but, just out of curiosity around how old are you? You seem very young to have so much power here." I talk quickly, hoping that in some way she won't be offended that I asked.

        "I am an early college graduate, and yes I do have a lot of power here don't I..." She takes a seat at her desk and lets out a relaxed sigh before returning to her smiley mood.

        "Sorry, but I don't think I ever knew your name..."

        "Oh! That's all my fault, I totally forgot to introduce myself! I'm Valorie Gates. Most people here call me Miss Gates, but you can call me Valorie!" I nod before I sit up off the guest coach and bend down to tie my worn-in Chuck Taylors. Out of the corner of my swollen eye I can see Valorie shaking her head. "Well I've decided what we are doing first today!" I can sense the ecxitement in her voice without evening looking up.

        "What are we going to do?"

        "We are going hunting." I snap my head up to see her smirking at me. 

        For a moment I think about Hunter and how his date with Anna went, I already feel like a world away from him... but a second later I'm snapped back into my world at the thought of innocent baby forest animals.

        "WHAT? I don't want to kill anything, I don't even know how to use a gun!" Well that's not true, father taught me but I just don't like to use them. "Shouldn't we be packing and getting ready for a plane trip or something?" I ask nervously. As soon as I stop talking Valorie just bursts into laughter. Obviously I'm missing the memo...

        "No, no, no silly! We are going hunting, hunting for clothes and shoes! And accessories of course! We can't have you meeting the number one boyband in the world looking like some farmgirl." What's wrong with farmgirls, I clench my jaw and fists. "Calm down, I'm going to make you look so FABULOUS that even I might be a little jealous!" Well at least that's better than hunting baby deers...

        After some serious consideration, I've come to the conclusion that if I am going to make the most of my life, I'm going to have to be willing to try anything and everything. 

        "Let's go hunting then" I almost sound excited and I'm not sure if that's a bad thing or not. I mean, I'm going to be meeting my child celebrity crushes the least I could do is make myself a little more... presentable.

        "Shall we?" Valorie offers me her arm and I interlock myn with hers to go skipping through the building until we reach the streets, the forest full of animals ready to be devoured by me and my new friend.
