Ch 49

Chandhini stood there alone for a long time. His harsh words ringing in her ears. It seemed like no matter what she did it always turned out wrong. Or was it really wrong? This time she was not wrong. She looked at bundles of cash at her feet. Her eyes welled up and teas ran down her cheeks.

He was insulting her because she didn't have money of her own. He didn't accept her love because she was an orphan. Did he ever really cared for her?

she really loved him but now it was starting to feel like something wrong. she was called a gold digger, cheap person just because she had dared to love him and then confessed it to him. he had laughed it away at that time calling it a mere crush but now as time was passing he used her love to belittle her at every turn.

He never shared anything about himself. she had no idea what he did the whole day and when she asked he didn't tell her. when she had tried to share her college life, he never listened. today, he had treated her so badly because she didn't ask his permission. It was all about him, her wishes, her dreams, her thoughts he didn't give them enough importance.

she had made a mistake and she had tried to make up for it. she was trying but he was not giving her a chance.

Still crying she went to wash room and washed her face with cold water. I will not cry, I will not cry. She told herself. I am not a gold digger and no matter what anyone says I know I am not after his money.

She took a quick shower repeating the same thoughts again and again in her mind. She changed into sleeping suit, took a sleeping pill and went to bed.

...

Advay came into room and closed the door. He moved toward the bed where chandhini was sleeping. He stood there silently staring at her sleeping form. Then, went to washroom to shower to move all the chlorine off his skin.

Then, he dried himself and went to bed. He laid there for ages but he could not sleep. Finally, he got up and sat on bed. The room light was on because chandhini didn't like to sleep in dark. He sat there staring at her for ages. She was fine but he couldn't forget how scared she had been in those days.

He looked at her face, this was so weird he cared about her but he hated her too. he didn't want her to be sad but he didn't want her to be happy. He liked that she loved him and desired him but at the same time he hated her for it.

Today, he had stepped back on his words, he had promised himself that he will make life as difficult for her as possible. He wanted to see her suffer. he wanted her to come and complain that it was too hot outside, that she could not travel in buses, he wanted her to ask him for money, he wanted her to feel that she had made a mistake that she could not do things with life as she wanted. he wanted her to suffocate in this relationship the way he was feeling but...

With every passing day, he accepted her more as a wife, with each day he looked forward to see her smiles, to feel her passionate responses in bed, he felt he was most beautiful man in the world when she looked at him with that little shy smile tucking on her lips. He had given in and today he had given her full access back to her bank account, the thought of her working for any stranger just because of money did not sit right with him. she was his wife. His responsibility. His little caterpillar.

...

Chandhini woke up in the morning not feeling fully refreshed. She stretched her arms and got up. Advay was not in room. Did he came back last night? She looked at time, it was 9. Today was Sunday and usually she slept late. She got up took a shower and dressed in simple grey denim shirt and white leggings. She braided her hairs and went downstairs. should she say anything further to him? should she try to explain again? No. he will not listen. Better to ask about job.

Since she had missed breakfast, she grabbed two bananas from kitchen and ate them.

Then, she wandered around the house trying to find Advay. He was sitting in lawn reading newspaper. An umbrella was open shading him from sunlight. She went over to him. She needed to say something to him.

Chandhini,''Morning''.

Advay ,''Morning.'' He didn't look up from newspaper. Will it kill him to look at her?

Chandhini,'' I need to say something.''

Advay,''I am listening.''

Chandhini,'' I am not quitting my job from academy.''

Advay folded the paper and put it on table,''I don't want you to do this job.''

Chandhini,'' I am not home tutoring. It's a reputable academy.''

Advay,''your grades are poor, you don't have any teaching experience, you are a college student yourself and yet they are letting you teach others. I can guess how good is this academy.''

Chandhini,''I teach English and you know I have always got A plus in that and if no one would give me job to teach, then how will I get experience?, anyways I want to do it''

Advay just glared at her in response. She glared back.

Advay,''fine, do it. But if you got poor grades in your own studies then you won't teach.''

Chandhini nodded.

Advay opened the paper again and started reading. Chandhini turned and went back inside. Finally he had agreed to something. She will show him. She will get good grades and she will teach at academy.

...

Advay watched her go inside. Did she thought a job was piece of cake? True, she was no science student but if she thought business and economics were light subjects then she was in for a shock or maybe she already knew but didn't care. She was barely passing her classes. She will definitely fail as her course will get tougher each semester or even if she passed her grades will be too low.

He looked at time, he could catch a few hours' sleep before lunch. Now that commissioner had received his transfer letter to middle of nowhere Advay was happy. He had to go some extra miles to get the letter delivered on Sunday but it was worth it. Let's see where they will find a good school for their kid. They might be used to abuse power but where he had sent them, they won't find anyone to abuse. Just acres of jungle and wild animals for company.

...

Slowly life settled into a pattern of college, academy, Mumbai and parties.

During week days, it was all about taking care of Advay, college and her studies, and her job. She eagerly looked forward to each Friday when she knew she could fly back to Mumbai and spent two whole days being pampered by Ayi. One hug from ayi was equivalent to ten spa treatments.

As for their social lives including  parties, well she avoided those she could avoid and the other times she stayed in a corner. If people didn't like her, she didn't like them back. She didn't try to become friends and didn't care. This annoyed a lot of people who wanted to give cold shoulder to the gold digger but she never gave them the opportunity.

It would have become awkward when it was her turn to host a party but somehow Advay managed. He organised things with same precision a general would for going to a battle. Advay also had the talent to keep people attention glued to him while she faded into background.

It was new experience for her. In Mumbai, people knew she was Chandhini Raizada. Wherever she went more than dozen hands of friendship were offered to her. Here, she was Mrs Raizada, Chandhini Vashisht Raizada to be exact. she sometime thought that this was what normally would have happened, if she hadn't been adopted into Raizada family. This made her little cynical and lot more wary of people.  when the person she grew up with judged her on the basis of wealth how could other people not do it.
