Staying awake was impossible that day. Even with all that was going on that day, even with Hanji prattling on about her experiments, which usually kept you awake to some extent, your mind was always drifting off elsewhere. Maybe it was the lack of sleep yesterday night, or the wolf on the balcony. A mixture of both perhaps. But there was just so much on your mind you couldn't think straight: The black puppy, the wolf on your balcony, Levi the painting of Levi you were working on, how you would get your pencils sharpened and food. Food was vital right now, especially when your stomach just decided to make that embarrassing sound halfway through Hanji's speech just now. You felt like you hadn't eaten properly in days and felt as if you'd soon be all ghostly and seethrough if this continued any longer.
"Hanji," you said, smiling weakly. She stopped abruptly in mid sentence. "What is it dear?" She leaned over the table, her long nose almost making contact with yours and the gleam in her glasses almost blinding you. "Um," you said, shrinking back a little. "I'm sorry to be rude, but I've seriously gotta go. I have this...headache thats killing me right now."
"Ah! What a shame (Y/N), I enjoy talking to you about these things you know. Oh well I'll see ya round!"
"See ya," you said, walking away quickly. You walked around bleakly for a while, wondering whether you should head for the place where you and Levi had been the other day. He wasn't anywhere else today it seemed, so it was possible he was already there waiting for you. At that moment though, you were snapped out of thought as you were confronted by commander Erwin. "Fine day (Y/N)," he said in his respectful tone. "You look pretty sleep deprived."
"I'll try stay as alert as I can sir," I told him. "Is there anything I can do for you at this moment in time?"
"Actually, yes. Would you take these to Captain Levi, you know where his room is, right?" He dumped a pile of paperwork into your hands. "Sir," you said, stamping your foot and headed for his room. Now you felt more awake than ever and that was fear driving you awake at that point. Your heart was beating so hard you felt it was threatening to rip out of your chest. Calm down, all you have to do is give him the paperwork and then leave, you told yourself. Though you didn't know, but only hoped that the minor situation would go like that.
You quickly bought yourself to knock twice on his bedroom door. After about thirty seconds, there was no answer. Seriously, where was he? "Captain Levi," you called hoarsely. "Sir, are you in there?" A lump rose in your throat. I should just put the papers on his desk, you thought.
The door was surprisingly unlocked and you nudged it open, stepping inside the sunlit room. You were not surprised to see that it was a very big, spacey, clean and organised room. Everything seemed to be in its proper place. Then you scanned the bed and could have jumped a foot in the air. There was a black puppy sprawled on the bed, it's legs in a queer position and its little tongue hanging from the side of its mouth. You recognised the little dog from yesterday. Was he really Levi's dog then? You edged closer to the bed, placed the papers down on his desk and bent down to stroke the dog. "Hey buddy," you whispered. "Remember me?" The look he gave me seemed to say yes as he jumped up enthusiastically, gave a small little woof and pressed his snout into your hand. "So you must be Levi's dog then. Does anyone even know about this?" You thought worriedly to yourself.
At that moment, you heard some more barking elsewhere and Levi stepped into the room, panting a little. He froze when he saw you on the bed with the puppy. There were two other puppies clinging to Levi. One was a larger, teenage looking white one and was biting his hair and the other was grey and batting at the buttons on his white shirt as if they were flies. You were almost bowled over with cuteness, though you thought he was going to get cross at you for being here without his permission.
He just raised an eyebrow in a friendly manner and said, "Well, good morning (Y/N). Can I do something for you?" You could see he was blushing and probably trying to look as less stupid as possible. But this was probably the cutest sight. The small white pup tried to gnaw at his ear and Levi eventually had to let him down. You couldn't help but giggle at this and tried to cover your mouth to stop yourself from laughing out. Since when did Levi have pets? You never even have that a thought.
"Oh no, sir I was just here to deliver some paperwork to you that Erwin gave me." You grinned as the white pup scampered up and leapt onto your lap, licking you ferociously. "Aww, it's too cute! But it tickles!" You laughed as you were bowled over on the bed by the lively white beastie. Levi then gave a smile, a real smile and said "Alright, come on Yana, down girl."
You smiled back through the licks Yana was giving you. She jumped off you and bounded back to Levi, sitting at his feet obediently. "Silly little girl," he tutted. "But she sure likes you." Now the curiosity grew ever stronger. "They're so cute Levi. Where do they all come from?"
"Their mother was killed by men with guns so I rescued them myself," he admitted. "Now I guess I have this thing for...dogs." You were struck with admiration. "You mean you actually rescued them yourself?" He nodded. "Levi, wow. That was brave of you. And from poachers, was it?"
"Yeah," he replied awkwardly. "You could have been shot," I told him. He just gave me an assertive smile and said "I know. Couldn't let them die though.""So what are their names?"
"So, the white one as you know is Yana," he said, looking down at the white pup who was biting at his shirt. "The grey one is Mosi, he's pretty shy and the little black girl is Jiji. Her and I are like a brother and sister and I suppose it's because she has my eyes and some of my personality." So that's why they look so alike, you thought.
"Jiji," you said as she curled up on my lap. "She's the one that knocked the books over in Hanji's lab yesterday." Levi blushed scarlet and muttered "Uh oh." Then added, ''She didnt do much damage did she?"
"Not really," you assured. "Hanji was pretty stressed out though."
"Oh well. Hanji's always stressed out," he shrugged.
"Levi," you asked slowly.
"Yeah?"
"Is it true that...you once wanted to open a tea shop?" He looked at me, a little puzzled, then replied with a sigh "Yes. I wanted to express my love for tea, really." He put his hand on mine. I didn't look away from his gaze this time. "But oh well, there's more to this world than tea. There are too many things right now that are worth fighting for. This little pack of pups is like the only family I have now. I've got to keep them safe from people so they don't know." A sigh escaped your mouth. "I've never met somoene as caring as you Levi," you said, brushing your thumb against his. "But really, opening a tea shop would have been a wonderful dream. Maybe one day when all this is over, you'll get to open one."
"What if you could run it with me," he said. "No really, we could work together, you and I. It would be fun."You smiled, delightedly. "I'd be honoured." Oh, how irresistible he was. Beautifully handsome and sweet too. You leaned just a little closer to him, almost feeling the breath on your cheek. "(Y/N)," he breathed. "I...I think that...you're..."
Well you never got to hear that because you both yelped as Yana and Mosi leapt up at you and covered you in licks and wet dog kisses, which made you both crack up. It was so wonderful, you had never seen Levi smile so much or laugh like this.
"I'd better get going," you said after a while. "This was so fun. Wow, I practically forgot I came in here just to give you paperwork," you added, laughing. "Well, see you, (Y/N)," he said. "See you Levi," you said, retreating out the door.
Just as you were going, he stopped you. "Wait," he breathed. "There's something I have to tell you." Your insides tingled with excitement and he took a breath in, a hint of agony on his face. "I trust you with this, ok? Yana, Mosi and Jiji are not dogs (Y/N). They're wolves." Your heart stopped for a moment that seemed like forever. Somehow you always knew. But they looked so much like ordinary wolf dogs you wouldn't have guessed they were actual wolf pups. "That's how I came across them being hunted in the forest," he said. "Look i'm sorry. I probably look like some wild animal keeping maniac now. But promise you won't tell anyone."
"I promise," I said and smiled. "You know Levi, just between you and me, you are not crazy for keeping three wolves in your room. You are caring and brave and if those are some qualities people can't admire, they must be blind." He blushed at your comment and you could see the light return in those blue eyes. "They're awesome Levi. You'd make a great wolf dad." You briefly kissed his cheek as a goodbye. It was smooth and warm, you could feel the heat for a moment beneath your lips. He looked stunned. "I'll see you sometime tommorow then."
"Yeah," he said softly. "I'd like that."
"Bye, wolf boy," you whispered as you walked away. You could barely speak. You were blushing all the way and radiating with happiness. You had nearly kissed Levi! Energy bubbled through you and you felt more alive than you had in weeks. You were developing a special friendship with him, which was soon to flower into something beautiful. That night, you sat on the balcony drawing the three wolf pups. And through the night, your wolf watched you with alluring blue eyes. He seemed to like your drawings too.
